After 2 years of reloading I finally was able to shoot one of my loads and take a game animal (hog). It was a .277 Sierra Pro Hunter 110 grain in my 6.8 Bison Armory upper. In this load i had 28.5 gains of H322. Coal. 2.260". I'm not sure the velocity(really would like to know), but accuracy was there and so was performance. I aimed right above the shoulder and the angle allowed to make pass thru right behind the other shoulder. Needless to say the lungs and heart were done for and the hog dropped in its tracks. Very happy and even more of a trophy with it being my own made cartridge. Even though it was a 100lber, still better than nothing. Can't wait to shoot a bigger one and also can't wait for deer season!

Don't worry about the velocity when you have good kill results and accuracy. I agree that knowing the velocity is a good thing for curiosity and record keeping, but I'd say your velocity for the killing round was perfect, regardless of what a chronograph might record!

A hundred pound Sow is eating size, they don't get better as they get larger (older) and IMO an old Boar tastes bad. If I have a choice I'll shoot the one or two year olds and not the really biguns.

Speed in a bullet isn't everything, one it tends to damage more meat. The hydro static shock bruises the meat and makes it look kind of unappetizing. And two it might not be the most accurate round for your rifle.

Sounds like you had good shot placement, it isn't easy shooting a Hog through the heart and dropping it in it's tracks.

I tried loading two 200+ pounders into my pickup truck one night. My bad back got a lot worse. I leave the really big ones for somebody who needs the ego boost and isn't afraid of a hernia.

My home loads perform as good as, if not better than, match grade ammo and are a lot cheaper. I'd like to find a bullet with just a little more expansion, but I'm afraid to mess with success and stick with what I've got.

What bullet are you currently using MudderChuck? I have found the Hornady Interlock and Interbonds to be very good performers on everything from Moose down to Hog. And they shoot very well out of every rifle I reload for except one picky sucker that will only shoot CoreLocts worth diddly squat. Don't ask me why. I have tried every conceivable formula but it patterns like a shotgun with any other bullet. If the rifle wasn't dear to me (It was my Great Grandpa's last rifle before he passed) I would have wrapped the damn thing around a tree.

I bought a bunch way back when, Speer 150 gr PSPBT. I get a lot of through and through with little expansion. About the same as the Core Loc I sometimes use.

Accuracy isn't a big issue with my rifle, it is way more accurate than I am anyway. But tends to shoot a 165 grain Core Loc the best. I tried to match that bullet as close as possible with my reloads. On a good day I can shoot overlapping holes at two hundred yards. At least until I shoot the rifle hot and then it tends to walk up a little. Got to love those Austrian rifles, Styer makes a good one.

Speer makes a great cup and core. They do tend to be a little on the hard side though. I used to load them for my .303 Brit. Knocked down several hogs with that load. Switched to the 150gr Interlock just to try it out. It performed a good bit better in both flight as well as terminal ballistics. Another good whacker for hogs is the Interlock Round nose. I don't know which caliber rifle you are using but last year I tried out the 175gr Round nose Interlock from my 7mm-08 on a few hogs. And let me just say BANG! Hit one 220 pounder from 130 yards out. End result was a bang flop. Heart blown apart. Only draw back was my group opened up from .285 to right at .360 which is still very acceptable. That particular 7mm.08 doesn't really like 175gr heavies. She's a clover leafer with 139gr Interbonds but I wanted to see how the 175gr RN's would do on a bigger hog. Nailed 2 other hogs that day, both being in the 150 weight class. Pretty much the same result. Can't really count one of them since it was a base of scull shot at around 45 yards where a .22 would have killed just as fast. But the other 2 were dead broadside lower shoulder heart shots.

Just again we were able to get two more hogs. The pro hunters will be my choice of bullet for 100 yards and in. Accuracy and performance are great for my hunting area. Also can't beat the price. I also loaded out to 2.285 and same accurate results with same powder charge.

I just loaded up a few 100 grain Accubonds with 4 different recipes in my 6.8 but it's raining so can't get out to the range today to test which load will be the best. Funny thing is, the OACL in the Nosler book is 2.260 max. That leaves a LOT of room in the mag. Their test runs were with 2.245. Even MORE room. Probably going to run them out a bit more because that is a good bit off the lands for my tastes. I know my 130gr Horn Interlocks were at 2.290 and were a tad tight to the mag. Never had any feeding problems but I am sure if I went any further out I would have.
