270 load!!
I have a ruger 270 that I'm gonna do some reloads for whitetail hunting and have read a good bit on powder and have had several people tell me to either use imr 4350 or h4831.I have also been stuck between sierra or speer 130 gr bullets. I'm a hunter not a bench shooter and I'm not to much worried about velocity numbers as much as performance on game so what wld you guys recommend for a load?

150 grain Speer and W760. I like the ball powders.
|
I always liked IMR 4831 with 130/140 gr bullets, IMR 4350 for the lighter ones, H4831 for the heavies in the 270.

My fav .270 Win load was 54 gr of IMR4350 pushing a 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip.

My 270 likes Nosler 140 gr Ballistic tips or accubonds and a full case of H450, lucky I have several pounds of the discontinued H450.

I have used 5x (I don't know the current lawyer max) grains of IMR 4350 with a 130 grain cup and core bullet for more than 50 years. I like Sierra, and Speer equally well, and Hornady just a tad better. I also experimented extensively with H 4831, which at that time was very inexpensive. At one point I corresponded with Jack O'conner asking how he managed to get 62 grains of 4831 in a case when for me, 60 grains filled it full. He said that he used WW cases and tapped the case while he was dumping the powder. Since, at the time, I shot a lot and this seemed too much of a hassle. I settled on 4350 which gave me similar velocity without filling the cases completely full.

You can also use a drop tube to cram more powder in a case.

Jack o'conner favorite 270 load and one I have used many times..
60 grains of H-4831 and the 130 grain bullet of your choice. |
Well hunter...
there's at least a couple of powders and a couple of bullets for many calibers, that will harvest a deer.

Hornady SPs or BTSPs and IMR 4350 will get er done!
