338 win. mag

Looking for loads 160 gr. tsx bullets in 338 win. mag.

I didn't know that Barnes made a 160 grain TSX .338 bullet.

The lightest TSX .338 bullet listed in my Barnes #4 manual and on their website is 185 grains.

Nor did I. LB3 shows a 160-gr TSX with a BC of 0.342 - if that's the same bullet. There are some loads listed as well. For the life of me though, I don't know why one would want to use a pill that light in a .338? Kind of defeats the purpose, IMO.

I've used bullets as light as 200 grains in mine and always find myself happiest with 250s.

Check out Hodgdons website and Barnes website for load data.

What propellant and primer are you intending to use?

Most of the loads I'm looking at using a 160-gr .338 bullet are pushing 3200 fps. The low BC of that bullet makes it less than optimal for longer-range shooting, and that's awfully fast for a light animal like a deer up-close.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll kill a deer. However, if there's a flip-side to the .243 being insufficient for elk - in spite of it being capable of killing an elk - this is probably pretty close to it. If it's the only rifle you have, then you don't have much in the way of options. Otherwise, I'd recommend a smaller rifle.

I wouldn't want to use the .338 on ANY deer.
Also . . . I will never forget a hunter I guided a few years ago from Alaska. He brought his .338 and drew a mule deer tag. All of us in camp thought sure he would end up with nothing much more than a big hole surrounded by bad hamburger. We were all wrong. The 180 grain bullet at that kind of velocity did not have a chance to open up and do any damage. He punched a hole in & out the size of your pinky and the deer took a couple steps before folding up like a wet card table.

I have used a 338 Win. for years. I have taken several deer, moose and elk with it but have not used 160 gr. bullets. For hunting deer I use 225 gr. bullets. It does not destroy any more meat than an 06 or 7 mag.
