How long will powder last?

I have prob 8 different cans of powder in my basement... Been down there for about 5 years... Just curious is it ok... I'm getting my reloading stuff back out and planning on using it...

If it was stored well it should be just fine.

Agreed! If it's in the original containers and was not subjected to moisture, it should be fine.

If it doesn't work ...

it'll let you know. Civil War and WWII ammo and explosives still can kill people.

It will be fine.

I've got some powder from the 90's & it shoots as good as new!

Mr. Longbeard 06-06-2014 11:08 AM

Cool beans thanks for the answer...

Keep it cool and dry and it will last longer than you will.

when you open it, make sure it still has the sweet ether smell and its still dark black or grey colored, if its rust red looking and smells acidic then its going bad.

Keeping the containers sealed is essential....I have powder from the 90's as well and all are still great!

Good info thanks

I inherited some supplies from my dad's neighbor. A can of IMR4895 still has the price tag on it..... $3.95. I think it's from the 1970s. Still shoots fine. Keep it sealed and it will last a loooong time.

Awsome info... I was worried it would waste

Just a curiosity and maybe a benefit to others, but I live in a very moist, humid climate. I wonder if packaged desicant can be placed in container without any effect on the powder? Any thoughts?

This past year I acquired 2 15lb containers of Win AA452 from a fellow deputy who's dad passed away. 1 was opened, the other not. They both have a price tag of $25!!!! The opened one shoots great!!!!! They are more than likely from the early to mid 70's.
