This rifle will stay around .5 MOA depending on my day at the range. It's not a benchrest type of accuracy but getting there real fast.

Now a .339 BC out of a .277 is quite amazing if you think about it. For the most part none of the 6.5's are in that class that I know of but limited on knowledge . It takes at least 180gr bullet in a 7mm to get there and 210+gr in a .308 to match or over come the BC.

I'm not saying it's the best, I'm not saying it's going to take home any awards. All I'm saying is it's about damn time the .277 has got a boat that will make the voyage with the rest of them.

Just for the kicks of it, if you were to put the new .277 bullets in a ultra mag or nosler case with all that capacity. I do believe there would be a light weight contender in the ring. Do they need to build the 27 Nosler as a commercial round? Yes I do believe this is a must. The reason this is not come to light is the 1 in 10" twist of standard .277 rifles made across the country. Things are about to change for the .277 fan club. Give it a few years to catch on. Hornady should of looked harder in their new line of bullets.

I'm bias on this subject because the 6.8mm has been way over looked in all aspects of the perfect medium range class of bullets for long range shooting and hunting.

BTW my load catches my 300WM using 165gr bullets going 3260fps on muzzle energy at 750 yards. Going 300fps slower at the start. So says the calculators. So it is a viable long range hunting set up. Now imagine stamping a magnum on the case and see what she'll do.

I know I'm just spouting and about to get slack, but I'm a 270 fan and it's about to get a following in the long range crowd. But that's just my theory, there's a lot of hard headed folks out there. Over bore pffft. Lets just say most of the super mags are over bore and be realistic. Because you just shortened all the barrel life on all them.
If you ever shoot the throat out of that rifle, you can rechamber to an 270 ackley Improved and have 270wsm ballistics. I know somebody will call bs on this thread, but a 25" 270AI with 62 gr rl19 runs a nlrab at just under 3200 fps. 60 gr h4831 is 3050 with a Matrix 165 in my 270AI. You will probaly be closer to 3300 with the 150s and 3100-3150 with the 165s in your rig! Picking up ONLY 8-10% as people quote Ackley as saying means 240-300 fps.

Jake,

I first tried the Matrix in the beginning and is why I had the rifle barrel built the way it was. I have reached over 3100 fps with the 165gr Matrix running 58.5gr of H4831. My barrel just didn't shoot the Matrix under MOA. When I tried the Berger 150gr it went sub MOA and the 170 gr EOL the same results. I can bump up the powder charge and play with groups at long range but haven't had the time to do so. I'm pretty satisfied with the results I have going now but always room for tightening up groups. But 1/2 MOA out of a hunting rig is not bad.

Yes the G7 is .339 on the 170gr EOL. It claims .670 on the G1. I lands right were Strelok says it supposed to so I believe Bergers data on this one.

If I was to build a second .277 long range rifle it will be on the STW case. But for now the Winny is running good.

nothing wrong with a .277 for long range if you can get a decent bullet, 10 years ago when wildcat made the 169.5 and 190 gr the 277's had a following, ever heard of the 270 and 277 Allen mag? the 190's had a G1 BC approaching .9, about the same as the 200 gr wildcats in .284, they are some thumpers if you have the capacity to get them beyond a grand.

Ridge,

I have looked at the Allen Mag pretty much a beast. My application for the rifle will probably stay under 1000 yards on game. My first go with the rifle at 1000 yards on target was 7" 3 shot group but that was in a 15 to 17mph wind about 75 degree crosswind. I haven't had the time to go play more. I'm in the process of building a range with nice steel targets. I can get to 1060 yards on my property. Moving to the new place is going to change a lot on how much practice time I get. Your welcome to come shoot prairie dogs next year after I get my shooting tower built. Too much to do this year working and moving.

This thread came up on a search from something some what related...So, I had to respond...:-)

First off, Jake Duke is a good person, even when I pooped in his 270/300 thread on LRH...

The 270 Wby runs very well for the "old Roy" stuff...

I have been reloading before 1978...

The 270 Wby has a steep shoulder and a long neck...

I have well over 2K rounds through my Benchmark, 1-9, Mark V, 28" barrel. No degradation in accuracy so far. I have posted pics (on LRH) to back up these statements...

I hate recoil, so it does have a muzzle brake.

Accuracy nodes in my rifle...

130 SST @ 3675fps

140 SST@ 3625fps

150 most bullets @ 3350fps (never did much testing with the 150)

165gr Matrix and the 170 Bergers @ 3250fps...

( all speeds measured with a magnetospeed v3)

The 270 "bee" is still a great cartridge, with out any fireforming...:-)

Just spin your bullets faster than 1-10...

The freak group that I shot with the 140s @ 3625fps...@ a lased 103 yrds...

I only loaded up three ( I usually shoot 5 round groups) because someone wanted to see how the mid weight bullets would shoot. I usually shoot the 270 heavies...
