.270 load w/H380 powder?
I am working on loading some 270. I got some advise that 380 was good stuff for the .270 and bought some. Very small grain powder and doesn' t fill half the case. Is this right? should there be filler or something? Anyone load for .270 with this stuff?

RE: .270 load w/H380 powder?
While H-380 is a great powder, it' s intended for the medium size cases and lighter bullets(243 win, 22-250 rem). It will work as does ok with the light 100 gr bullets in the 270 Win but it' s burn rate is a bit too fast for decent velocities with 130,140,150 grian pills in my opinion.
You are right in saying that it' s a fine spherical powder, it meters great through powder measures!:) IMHO I would use the old standby for the 270 Win which is H-4831, it' s performance is outstanding in this cartridge with the previous mentioned bullet weights. The velocities are good with decent pressures. Dont get me wrong, like I said H380 is also a good powder, I have burned many pounds of it in the 22 centerfires but you wont be disappointed with a slightly slower burning powder such as H-4831.......AA |
RE: .270 load w/H380 powder?
Someone handed you a line....H380 is not a good powder for the .270
I doubt that any handbook shows loads for the .270 and H-380 powder. |
RE: .270 load w/H380 powder?
Funny, my Lyman # 47, Sierra # 2 and Speer # 13 all list loads using H380. What weight bullet are you using and what is the charge? Essentially a 270 is a 30-06 case necked down. While I like H380 for my 257, 307 and 06, I think you should try a couple different powders to see which combination your gun likes best.

RE: .270 load w/H380 powder?
I dumped a 43 grain load into the first shell and didn' t seat the bullet, didn' t like the looks. And the Speer 13 book does list it as a load for the .270 up to 150gr. I' m using a 130gr Speer Grand slam bullet. I like the H4831 and have used this in my 338.
So here is my delema. I primed about 40 rounds with magnum primers for the H380, which it called for. Can I safely deprime them and save the components? I really don' t care about the primers, but would like to use the brass. Can I use the mag primers if I use the 4831? Thanks. |

RE: .270 load w/H380 powder?
I' m scrapping the 380 for r19 and xmr4064. Going to load a couple different bullets behind each, I picked up some 150 gr Partitions, 1140 gr Hornadays, and had the 130 speers. I want to try them all out b/4 Deer season up here. Looking for load data on the accurate powder? any help, links? Thanks.

RE: .270 load w/H380 powder?
my apologies.....my Lyman manual lists the H-380 all the way to 170 grain bullets.
My Hodgdon manual only lists it for the 100 grain bullet and then it' s in 7th place for performance. (Basic reloaders manual 2000) The performance powders for the .270 are IMR 4831, H-4831,RL 19, RL 22, Sorry, I' ll do a little more checking next time.....but the H-380 still isn' t a good powder for the .270 |
