270 bullet for deer

I have some hornady 130gr sst but have heard a lot of things about them not penetrating and just "exploding" within the first inch of penetration. I was thinking about buying some nosler 130gr accubonds. I have heard great things about those but was wondering about your opinions.

thanks

My experience with the 150 grain SSTs in my 30-06 about ten years ago was not good because of too rapid expansion on deer. I tossed them and went to their SP and BTSP for antelope and deer in three different calibers and to their Interbond for elk with my 30-06s with no further problems.

Last season my wife hit a big body whitetail square in the front shoulder with a 130 Ballistic Tip (BT). Although the deer dropped and was as deader than political common sense, the BT came apart inside the chest cavity. I have used the BT for many years and that is the first time that I have seen one completely fragment. I am replacing all of my BT loads with Accubond (AB) bullets. The cost of the AB is not much more than the BT and they shoot just as well as the BT in my rifles. The AB is a very good bullet.

I have always used 150g Nosler BT's in my 270 win and have taken over 50 deer with it in the last 20 or so years without a single bullet failure or lost animal. About 3 years ago I switched to a 270 WSM as my primary deer rifle and use 140g AccuBonds in it...also a great bullet but a marked increase in velocity. I have taken a dozen or so deer with that combo over the last 3 years and also, no bullet failures and no lost animal...great bullet. With a standard 270 I agree with RR...stick with the BT and you'll never be disappointed.

As a long tme user of the .270 Win I can attest to the effectiveness of the Nosler 130 gr ballistic tip. That bullet gave me exceptional accuracy and was devastating on whitetails, mulies and antelope from distances of literally in your face close to beyond 400 yds. A great bullet.

thanks, I appreciate it. I'll pick up some nosler BT ammo and switch to that and if I shoot things bigger than whitetail I'll use my 300 win mag with accubonds.

My dad shoots NBT 130's in his .270 also. He likes them. I personally prefer Hornady Interlocks over any of the BT bullets. But hey, they all work.

I shoot 130gr Hornaday SP, 53gr Hybird 100v, and it knocks them senseless.
Just my 2 cents worth

The Sierra 130gr Pro Hunter is deer poison from a 270. :)

I have been shooting the Hornady 140 grain BT out of the 270 bee for a lot of years. They work on everything from elk and moose down. Totally trash gophers and yotes too. Deer are easy to kill, and IMO you don't need a high $$$ premium bullet to flatten them. I do use the partitions and grand slams on bigger things that can cause you a world of hurt, but for deer, this is not needed.
