Reloading handgun bullets
Quick question , Is it harder to reload handgun bullets than rifle bullets?
Reloaded rifle bullets for years , for my 308 and my 30-30 (168gnHPBT) because nobody made them. Thanks |
I don't, but from what I read on reloading forums, it sounds like it may be easier with less or no resizing, etc. I'm sure someone here that's in the know will expound on that.

Generally easier. Far less case prep.
If possible purchase carbide size die in a three die set. This eliminates case lubing. Straight wall cartridges require Size, remove spent primer, very slight case mouth bell, new primer, powder, bullet and usually either a roll or taper crimp depending on chambering. Check cases for uniform length as this wil give you uniform crimps. |
I reload for a 44 mag and find it easier the powder runs through my thrower alot easier. I can load 50 of those in no time at all.

I think it's a little easier because of little less prep.
I use a medium burning powder for my .40 and .380 so if I was to accidentally throw a double charge it would overflow the case. |
Thanks, kind of replies I was looking for.

Just make sure when you expand you expand just enough to hold the bullet while you raise the case into the press - let the press do the rest of the bullet seating work. Too much expansion too deep into the case and the round will not chamber correctly. In the case of a semi-auto the round gets jammed in the chamber and it can be very tough to remove. (One guess how I know this....)

On the smaller cases like .380, 9mm, and .40 you really have to make sure you are at the recommended OAL. If you are under even by a little have increased the pressure. Depending on how far it can cause serious problems. With larger cases it's not as big a deal. Other than that it's really no harder to load than rifle other than the fact you are dealing with smaller components.

Resize and lube, then reload cartridges. I am sure that you meant cartridge when you stated "bullets". But your vocabulary needs to be precise when discussing ammunition reloading. |
