New Brass

A friend of mine gave me a bag of new unfired 280Remington brass. My question is, is it worth fire forming them to my chamber, so when I load them the accuracy may be better? If so, what method do you use?

Fireform

I've been loading for the .280 for nearly 20 years. I can't tell any difference between loading new brass or using fireformed brass. My loads that shoot well perform the same whether they come from new brass or fireformed. I wouldn't waste my time.

Thanks guys that's what I'd hope you say. Some friends who are target shooters were saying I needed to do that to obtain the best accuracy. I was wondering to myself how much more could I possibly get? I weigh each charge and have the bullets extended out so they are not touching the lands and groves.

Brass

Target rifles are a different animal altogether. They have custom chambers and depending on the reamer may require neck turning just to chamber a round. The .280 I mentioned earlier isn't a finicky rifle by any means. In my younger years I weight sorted all my brass, neck turned it, fire-formed, & meticulously so that each piece would be the exact same OAL. Then I started assembling loads by weight sorting and trimming. All this showed me that weight sorted, trimmed brass shot just as well as fire-formed, neck turned brass. My rifle has a Douglas barrel & was cut with a reamer to be able to shoot factory ammo if needed. I have a 25-06 with a Broughton barrel and it's the same story. So, just save yourself all the time in the world and enjoy your rifle and reloading for it. I do feel a sense of pride when I take a nice Buck with a handload versus factory fodder!

SuperPig, thanks for the info. I love my 280!!! I replaced the 30-06 bbl that was on my Rem700 with a 24" Hart #4 slight tappered bbl. That rifle is deadly. So far my favorite load is 57gr of Hodgons 4831SC with either a Nosler 130gr Balistic Tip or Hornandy's 139gr SST. In my rifle I'm getting a MV of 3100fps.
