Been loading for a couple of years but haven't formed any cases from its parent case. If forming 280 Rem cases from 30'06, am I correct in thinking that I can size em, put a couple grs of pistol powder with cream of wheat, grits etc, stuff with tissue and fire form the shoulders? Going from '06 to 280 I shouldn't have to trim but may have to for some other cases, correct?

instead of necking down 06 brass try using 270 casings and size them up. just make sure to lube them well before running them through the 280 resizing die. make sure your dies are set right before trying this. i also put a little lube on the inside of the neck so the casing wont stick.

Bored. Been tinkering around the house since yesterday, cleaned the garage, fertilized trees, adjusted lawn sprinklers etc. I have probably a 1000+ cases of '06, just experimenting.

[quote=Ridge Runner;3931550]30/06 casings are .046 shorter, and to use 270's you would hafta go bigger than 280 because the 280 shoulder is farther foreward than a 270, so you would have to neck it up to 30 cal, then size for a crush fit in the 280 chamber.
Ridge, can you better explain this.

I fire form 30-06 for my .280 but I found I get pretty good accuracy using the start load for 140gr bullets.I forget the powder/charge off hand.Anyway it's a good load for practice shooting.Groups are around 1 1/2" at 100 yds from the bench.

Formed .280 cases years ago. Ridge Runner explained the best procedure very well. Start w/.270 brass, neck up in '06 die, form .280 shoulder in .280 die, load and fire-form. Just make sure the newly-formed case fits snugly into your rifle, with head against boltface, and neck firmly against chamber....

Another good point but I dont see a real need to turn necks if you are going from a 270 to 284 or even 308 since the necks get thinner as you go up in size, but it may be necessary if going from 308 down to 284 since the necks thicken when reducing diameter.
