My Ruger All Weather M77 did not like any factory ammo I've tried. I began to reload and found a recipe to be very effective on Wisconsin Whitetails. With factory ammo I could only get about 3 MOA groups.
I put 49.5gr of IMR4895 in new or prepared brass, CCI primer, and top it off with a 150 gr Sierra Pro Hunter bullet. I can hit a quarter three times at 100 yds with this load. The last twelve Whitetail shot between 30 and 220 yards have all fallen were they stood when I hit them, no tracking. I hated the Ruger until I began to reload, now it will always be one of my go to Whitetail rifles. |
Not one person in this post asked what you were hunting and how far you think you are going to shoot. If you are hunting wood and 100 yds is a long shot - 3" groups at 100 yds is very acceptable. Most of us have gotten into the MOA or less requirement, me included. But honestly is it really necessary for the average hunter?

Wow, lots of responses. I was hoping to hear more about what factory shells people like but, eh?
I like 165 partitions over 55 grains of IMR 4350 with a cci 200 primer. Shoots right a 2800 in my rifle. So far the best factory ammo I've found has been Hornady Superformance 165 SST's at 2960 fps. 2 shots in the same hole, one 1/2" away. Pretty ok by my standards. Don't worry about me being any sort of novice, I've been Hunting and guiding deer and elk hunts here in Utah for the last 15 years. Just trying to broaden my horizons. |
IMR 4831 -57gr /180 gr Hornady or same powder + 58gr with a 165gr Hornady.Either shot 1/2 MOA or better at 100 yards any time out .From a AG47 BRNO .Usually one ragged hole.......Harold

My favorite load is using the HORNADY 150GR. boat tail spitzer and 47gr. of IMR 3031. My friends have tried it and they found it great in their 30/06 rifles too. Gets 2763 FPS.
It has taken deer with no problems.let me know if it works for you. |
I don't own a 30.06 anymore but when i did i never shot factory ammo so i can't help with that. I preferred the lighter bullets in my 30.06 and had good luck with those with accuracy and on game performance. I killed lots of deer using the Hornady 130gr sp and IMR4064. I also had good results on paper with the Sierra 125gr PH and 4064 but never shot a deer with that load. Back in 07 i worked up a load with the Barnes 130gr tsx and RL15 and killed some nice deer with that load. The lighter bullets kick up the velocity and really flatten out the 30.06. Mike
