7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
I like the 175g bullet with RL-22 since it' s almost 3,000 fps. The groups are only 1 1/2" though and I' d like a little more accuracy out of this hunting load. I' ve heard some people saying they have better luck with 160g pills. Any thoughts or suggestions?
I' ve got the OAL dialed in pretty close so now need to work on bullet and powders. Thanks for any help. |
RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
I have never found any need for 175gr bullets in the 7mm bore.I have taken several elk, moose and bear with 140gr partitions in the 7mmremmag and 7mmstw.The 140gr,150gr and 160gr partition will all work well for deer, elk, moose and bear so I would use the one that groups best in your gun.

Thanks SJ. You guys usually mail-order bullets or buy local? Seems shipping would kill the cost savings. Price for a box of 50 Partitions here is around $25.

RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
I live in a city of 40,000 people but we have no stores that sell guns or reloading supplies within a few hour drive so I pick up supplies when I am in the nearest big city(over 4 hours away)or order supplies by mail order(except powder and primers which can' t be mailed)I buy bulk to maintain lot numbers and to reduce trips to the city and to minimize shipping costs.I spend up to $1000 at a time to stock up on components.

RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
power, what are you hunting?
from my experience (actual) 1 1/2" groups are fine for hunting accuracy. If you believe you really want 175 grains have you tried Swift A-frames or TBBC bullets? The 7 Mag is a fine rifle with far less bullet weight. If you' re hunting 800 pound animals then I agree.....use the 175 grain bullets. |
RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
I' m hunting deer (both whitetails and muleys), Elk, and black bear. I think the partition is a good all-around bullet for these types of animals. If I was only hunting deer I' d probably be shooting the bal. tips. I figure this way if I see a really big bear I won' t have any problems plus if I ever get drawn for a big elk tag I' m ready. Of course, I haven' t been drawn yet in 7 years but gotta keep trying I guess.

RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
Power, just a few weeks ago I shot a 150 pound (on the hoof) antelope and dropped it in his tracks using a 200 grain swift A-Frame from a .300 H&H. That was serious overkill and my point is that there' s too sides to error on, over and under.
Deer are not big animals and should be hunted with anything you want.....after that I personally recommend the 175 grain bullet in the 7 MM mag for really big game. You said you' re hunting deer.....shoot any bullet that you like until you draw that elk tag. I still say 1 1/2" groups are fine for a 7MM mag. |
RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
No, I get 1" groups @ 200 yards with 175-grain bullets; Sierras, Noslewr Partitions, and Rem. PSPCL' s in my No.1B 7mm Rem Mag. Also with 160' s. Neither is better....

That load seems to be a pretty good to me. Good luck. |
RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
Ok, I bought 2 boxes of 160g Partitions and a can of IMR 4831 last night. Loaded up 25 rounds with different OAL' s. Started at 3.305 then .300, .290, .280, and .270. Rifle has lands that seat the bullet back around 3.315" . Hopefully I can find which load is the one the rifle likes and then load those for the season this year. Using them for Mule/Whttl deer, Elk, and Bear. Pushing them along at 3,008 fps should yeild a pretty good package I think. Just hope they shoot pretty good.

RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
Oh ya, I' m also using Federal 215 Gold Match primers. I' ve had better luck with them than the standard Federal 215 M primers.

RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
It should work OK, but I find IMR4831 to be just a " tad" on the fast side for heavy bullets in the 7 Mag. I prefer H4831, 7828, MRP, or RE22 in this large case. The 175-grain is certainlty NOT REQUIRED if you are using a tough bullet, the 160 is about as good, so use which ever one shoots best for you.:D

RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
Thanks. I still have some RL-22 and some IMR 4850 left so I can try some loads with those powders as well to see if there is any difference.
Been WAY too hot around here this summer. Not much shooting time. I shoot 3 shots and my barrel gets super-heated and won' t cool down! Going to have to go late at night or real early in the morning I think. |
RE: 7mm Rem. Mag. with Partitions
i get 1 inch groups or better with 162 grain hornady spbt and i use the same rl-22 but i prefer to use cci primers and neck size also. i also set my bullet .002-.003 off the lands. good luck. that is the first load i ever tried and it did what i wanted it to so i stick with it.
