Loading down the .270?

I think I have seen a show where the person reloading was using less powder and some sort of filler to get nearly as accurate results. (just plinking). I think the filler was called dacron. (it looked like a cotton ball). The caliber they were reloading was a .223. I was wondering if it was possible w/ a .270. I would love to shoot more for less with nearly the same groups. Has anyone ever heard of this or was I dreaming that I saw this show? Thanks.

Hodgedon has some reduced loads on thier webpage. I was surprised how well some of them shot. They put them out for kids I guess.

i have seen this done in a magazine a while back. it works by putting the dacron btween the bullet and powder to keep the powder over the primer. this prevents excessive pressure in the case i beleive.the dacron can be found at any local national retailer or sewing shop.

You don' t really need filler. Its there to keep the powder in a consistant position for every shot though. If you load your rifle one shot at a time, just do the same ritual for each shot- either give the rifle a little shake so that the powder lays flat in the case, or tilt the rifle back to setle the powder at the botom of the case and slowly ease the rifle back into shooting position.

Thanks for your replies. Now I understand what the dacron filler was used for. Does anyone know any loads or have any books that would reference what powder and gr. amount, for " loading down" ?

Bigcountry,
Thanks for replying. I went to Hodgens website and couldn' t find an area that gave loaded down loads. Maybe I missed it, or maybe they changed their website. If it is still there, can you explain how you got to that particular area of the website. Thanks.

I have a reduced, cast-bullet load for my .375 H&H that uses a 255-grain gascheck bullet and 60 grains of H4831 with a 1/10 grain puff of cotton over the powder to keep it in place. It shoots about as well as a full-charge load, gives 1900 FPS MV, and could be used for deer huinting as well as plinking/target shooting. Recoil is down around the .30/' 06 level. I never down-loaded a .270, but there' s no reason you couldn' t do just as well with it.
