40 S&W What is your favorite powder?
I'm looking for another good powder to load up some 40 S&W. I'm using some SR4756 right now and it seems to be okay. I have to keep it on the upper end of recommended loads to cycle my G23 without problems. I'll be loading 180 gr. bullets. What is your favorite?

HS-6. My favorite pistol powder for everything. Great mid load for 357mag, 44mag loads, top performance 38spl loads, perfect for 40, 45ACP, and 357sig. Its a do it all powder. meters excellent.

My standard powder I use is win 231/Hodgdon HP38, not loaded real hot. I got some AutoComp by winchester some time back, which is a little better suited for the 40 then 231 is, but never got to shoot off the rounds I loaded yet. Silhouette from Ramshot is supposed to be another good one for the higher pressure rounds, its basically the same as the old WAP, just with flash suppressant.

I normally use Win AutoComp. HS-6 is also a good choice.

Blue Dot is my first choice.

You know when I was a quest to find a good load for 40S&W, unique actually shot better than the rest. And also wasn't real dirty like it is in the 44mag and other reduced pressures. Only thing is the metering of flake powder. |
Unique!
I use Unique in 9mm, 40 S&W, and 357 Mag. I have never considered it "dirty"; especially when compared to Bullseye. I've never felt that my loads showed inconsistancy from metering through my progressive press. Maybe I'm just lucky.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!! |

GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!! Unique was the 1st powder I tried and I didn't get good groups with it at all. I found it was pretty dirty, but I guess most handgun / shot gun powders are. I hope to check out the HS-6 mentioned when I get time. I can't do it at work, most sites that have anything to do with guns are blocked. Thanks for the replies. |
