pistol dies oversizing
 

Does anyone else find that carbide straightwall dies for rimmed cartridges oversize the crap out of cases?

You end up getting a loaded round where you can see the outline of the bullet. I load for 44mag, 460Smith, 45Colt, 45ACP's, 357sig, 38sp, 40S&W, 9mm, and a few more I probably forgot about.

All the revolver cases seem to show this.

I have started taking starlines advise and only sizing enough case for the bullet to hold

Anyone else doing this? Anyone see a problem partial sizing? I use an deprime die to deprime. So no touble there.

I had an interesting conversaion with a guy from starline. he said the reason I probably see such a huge difference with 460S&W hornady brass, is its thicker than thier starline brass and you should buy hornady dies for it. Never knew this, but makes sense.

..... I've noticed it in my .44 Mag, .41 Mag and .45 Colt. Just thought it was normal.... Where I REALLY noticed it was in my 45/70 rounds. It almost looks abnormal.... but they chamber and shoot just fine.

Just got off the phone with a guy at hornady. He wants me to compare my 460 brass hornady with starline.

I usually also see the bullet outline, but never the webbing. Its extremely appearant on the 460. Same die on the 45 colt, doesn't show it.

I also see it on 45-70. Too bad you can't just size just part of it, because its tapered.

Well, I took some measurements and fed em to the tech at hornady. He seems to think its within spec.s

For a 460S&W, webbing should be 0.478" and all were and are after sizing. In front of the webbing is .471". He said its a tad tight but normal. I guess its just because these 460 cases are so long.

I compared with Starline brass, and got close. The hornady brass is thick at 13.5 to 14 mil, compared to 12.5-13mil on the starline.

The only time I full length any of my brass any more is when its new or range pick up. I'm lucky my 38/357s share brass. Just 1 9mm and 1 45.

That's not quite true the rifle cases get fl'd about 1 in 6 loads , the 45s I do when I anneal the mouths 1/10 maybe. I have a couple of spacers intended to allow 1 to set up their dies for 38s then put in the spacer under the dies for 357s. I used them for some time now I've a spare sizing die set up to do about .450" on the 38s.

The thicker the brass the more noticable it will be. As long as the rounds chamber correctly there is no cause for an alarm. You should see my 9mm IDPA loads with Berry's bullets :s11:

It's really no different than if you were using a lead bullet that needs to be oversized to prevent gas cutting.

If they chamber....shoot'em up!

Funny thing happened ,I replaced the home defense ammo ,every one of the 9mms are Coke bottled. They came right straight from Winchester that way. At least for a $1 a shot I get nickled cases ,I always was a sucker for chrome. Those nickled cases do clash w/the copper jackets and primers.
