The lowley 243

Due to age and condition of my old frame, I have gone back to my 243. I have a pre 64 mod 70 243 that I love. The older I get the more I love it. Your thoughts Please, Rusty

Me Too.

I've had the same idea, for a while! The pounding from larger rifles is no longer fun! The accuracy of this little gun still is an amazing thing to see. Maybe i am just lucky, but every deer i have taken with it, just fell where i shot it.
I could go on and on.but won't.

Hunted with a whole lot of bigger guns for years. Used my 7Mag for deer for 20 years. I've since discovered the 7-08 about 6 seasons ago, and have no desire to change. I hear ya....

I guess im one of the few that never got magnumitis, I have always used a .243, for some 30 years or so.
But all the rave of the 7-08 took its toll and I recently moved to that.
But the .243 is a fine killing machine, it never took more than one shot from it to do the job, put it where it counts and start skinning.

"Lowly" is not a word I would apply to the .243.It's a great choice for deer size critters.

started out with a 243, still shootin her

I hear ya!!!!!! I like my 243.Can't comment on the way it kills cause I haven't hunted with it yet, next year I'll change that.

My .243 is a Remington 700 SPS DM and I use it as a dedicated predator walking stick.

I use bulk ammo loaded with hornady 75gr V-max and shoot the the bullseye out at the range and put coyotes down DRT.

What's not to like ??!!

243?

I've never owned a 243. I did, however, have a 600Rem in 6mm and loved that little rifle. In my "young and stupid" days I let it go. Never went the "MAGNUM" route, but did try the 30/06. As I have grown older(and hopefully smarter) I have gone to the less oppressive 25's.
250/3000
250 Ackley
257 Roberts
25/06
IMHO, with the right loads thjs battery will fill most of the uses of the 30/06.
GOOD LUCK and GOOD SHOOTING!!!

I bought a .243 in 1980, it's the only centerfire I own, it works why change???

I was at the range yesterday with my 243 and so was another fella there with his 243.He had his chronni setup and was messing with some handloads. If i didn't see it with my own eyes i wouldn't believe it.....1/4" groups @ 100yds!!!! 3 shots almost thru the same hole. The bullet was sierra gameking 85g i forgot what powder he said he was using. The rifle was a stock tikka. The best i could get with my rem700 and factory ammo was 1 1/4".

Pawildman 02-25-2011 06:35 AM

....Yeah.. Those 85 gr. Sierra HPBT bullets have always shot well in any of my .24 cal guns.

I'm gonna buy the lee kit and try to find some spare time and get into this. yes i know rcbs is better but it's easier to waste $100 than it is $300

Try the Federal Premium loading with that bullet...I've tried it in 2 of my buddy's 700s...I won't say it was a 1/4 inch group but it was under 3/4 inch with both of them...

Yeah i'm going to buy a few boxes when i go to cabelas in march. That bullet seems to preform well, accuracy wise. How does it preform on deer?

I've killed about 25 with it, no problems...Add another 25 or so between 2 of my buddies...Many think a hollow point bullet opens up before a soft point, these don't...Their core is harder and the jacket is thicker, so they actually give more pass throughs than many soft points...
