Default Small circle dies for 308

Gentleman, I have a question, I have a 308 Browning model 81 lever action gun that I bought in the late 80s.
The gun has never cycled Federal shells worth a *&%# My Father has the same gun same type of problem, the rifle shoots Winchester fine and most Remington ammo.
My question is this, in my RCBS reloading manual it says that for my gun it is best to use 308 small circle dies, what is the difference between my reg 308 die and this small circle die?
I have always had to cam over with my regular 308 RCBS die to get my Winchester and Remington reloads to fit in my chamber, can anyone explain why I have to cam over with this rifle but do not in my other rifles? and why does RCBS recommend that I use a small circle die. I know what works and what does not in this gun but I do not understand why, so can some one explain it to me?

Thx for reading and responding to this post.

You most likely have a chamber that is on the minimum side of tolerences and the weaker action of the lever makes it hard to chamber a round.
Small Based dies are dies that resize the case to absolute minimum demensions. Using them will usually shorten the life of the brass as it works it more but will solve the problem on autos and levers.
