Howdy guy's,One of my buds came up and showed me some rounds he concocted last night.He to a 3" mag .410 and cut enough plastic off of it and loaded a .45 cal 185 grain cast bullet for a .45 colt into what was left of the shotshell (loaded pretty hot) the whole thing is about the O.A.L. of a .45 colt.said he was getting decent grouping out of a judge.:eek2:What'cha think I he crazy or not I haven't decided.

There are a few very creative reloaders that do things in an unconventional manner....there are also complete idiots out there....

Before I attempted to duplicate any such load, I'd ask what manual he got the load from!

I also wonder what the goal is....does he think that cast bullet will stabilize in a .410 barrel?

Not being all that familiar with a "Judge" I can only summize that it will also fire 45 Colt rounds. If so it would be more effective to just buy 45 Colt ammo and be done with it. There is no cost savings in the method and I don't see the point.

Yes, the judge does fire 45 colt ammo, and the barrel is rifled. I'm not seeing any reason for doing this.

There are a lot of creative things you can do, like loading wax or hot glue bullets, using buckshot as a projectile in certain calibers, loading reduced loads.

I am not seeing any benefits here, only big unknowns, which equal big risk.

they are the same size..i heard it before, but have no 1st hand knowledge.

Why not just shoot a 410 slug?

First off, the .45 Colt and .410 bore shotgun are, indeed, the same diameter. Remember, in the US ammunition is named based on what is going to sell, not any number that makes sense. Look at the .38 Special -- it's a 36 caliber, nominally sized at .357, not even close to being a 38 caliber round.

So anyway, they are the same size, and the Judge is designed with chambers to fire both rounds.

So, essentially, what your friend had done is load his own .410 slugs. He hasn't made anything new, just short slug loads.

Using 45colt cast ammo in a 410 has been done lots of times Its an oldtimers trick. Still a short range load say 25-30 yards max.

For resont date aplication look at TC Contender and the Judge hand gun both have 45colt/410 barrel or cylinder capibilities.


Very iffy to do it as the poster said could be dangerous with unknown pressures. We know what std. 45colt pressures are and what the n410 slug are too.

Wouldn't that ensure a case rupture? Plastic case in a higher pressure than it was intended for? Maybe I'm wrong. I just wouldn't do it.

I always wondered what would happen if you loaded a 12 gauge shell with a frozen Tater Tot. I would never try it, just wondered what would happen. Probably end up with mashed potatoes :D
