3006 - Reloader22 - 165gr ???
 

Anyone reload 3006 using Reloader 22 and 165 gr. bullets? I see Reloader 22 used with 180 gr. bullets for 3006 but not with 165. Any explanations? Anyone have success using the two?

certain powders are formulated to do certain things.

At times the best powder to use is one that is at or near a compressed load. when the powder is compressed in the shell - it does not roll around or settle to the bottom when you shoot the firearm - hence it burns better.

If you use a powder that ignites too fast or slow it will cause accuracy and pressure issues.

The best powder in my opinion for a 30-06 is the IMR 4350, or the IMR 4320 - depending on what you want it to do.

RL-22 is a little slow for a 165 in a 30-06... RL-19 might be a better choice, or 4064 or 4350....

If you are loading 180 or 200 grain bullets, RL-22 might work fine,...4831 would be a good choice also...

Alliant lists 62 grains with the 165 for 2725 FPS....and even less velocity with RL-19.....

Alliant has to have the worst loading data of all the powder company s.....I think even Ramshot is better documented!

I'll guarandamntee you that you can get close to 2900 FPS or more with the .30-06/165s and the right powder.....

So far, I have reloaded some 165's (Speers, SST's, and Interbonds) with Varget and IMR4350. The Varget shot better groups then the IMR4350 all across the board. My 700 doesn't like the Interbonds at all with either powder.

My hunting load is a 180 gr. Nosler Partition over 59.5 grains of Reloader 22. That load is giving me 1 inch groups. After reading about the velocities you guys posted here, I'll try something else that is suggested and a little faster for the 165's.

I have tried it. Problem is, RL22 likes to run hot. And you just can't build up enough pressure to get it hot enough with 165gr bullet. With 180gr-200gr, yes.

Ditto my experience as well. RL 19 would be a better alliant choice for 165, though hard to argue with IMR4350 as goto powder.

I see on the burn rate charts that H4350 and IMR 4350 are very close. I think I'll try some H4350 next if they have some at Sportsmens. I'll also try some different bullets with the IMR4350. My next bullet to experiment with will be a 165gr. Nosler Accubond. I'm assuming that the H4350 may shoot differently then the IMR4350.

Sorry didn't realize you had troubles with 4350IMR...duh! Try the 19 if your buying powder anyway, you may find a winner. Led to believe IB's either shoot or don't...that is how I ended up with oodles in .284, shooting friend couldn't get them going and what was his headache became mine. So far 2 rifles have shot them extremely well and 3 others not so well. Good luck

Thanks! With 180 grain Partitions and Sierra Prohunters my gun seems to like RL22 over IMR4350. It not a huge difference in accuracy but enough to decide on RL22 for my hunting load.

With the few 165 gr bullets I tried, I didn't get the results I had hoped for either with IMR4350. I had loaded sets of 4 starting at the minimum working up in .5 gr. increments up to max and then took the best groups and went up and down by .2 gr. to test. Also played with OAL.

I'm still new at this and only been reloading for less then a year so I have plenty of options to still play with for my 06. Is H4350 a totally different powder then IMR4350?
