Reloading 300WSM
 

I plan to reload my 300WSM empties after firing in my Savage stainless rifle only one time. The brass is from Federal Fusions. Will I have to trim after only one firing? I was hoping to only partial size the brass in my RCBS full length sizing die by only inserting the cases into the dye only half way. Thanks in advance for any feedback I may get.

You can use a neck sizing die or adjust your FL die to only neck size. It'll be in a "bit" more than halfway though!

Given the angle of the case you should not have to trim after a single firing, but you should measure the cases anyways to make sure they are under max length.

In the 300 WSM, after the first firing, the case length usually shrinks just a little as the case diameter is expanded. That is also the reason you will most probably find that a partial resize won't work. If you're one of the very few lucky ones, you might be able to neck size, but chances are you will have to full length size.

From what I've seen and also read about, Federal brass isn't real great for reloading. I've had oversized primer pockets with once fired Federal, and it seems many others in the forums have also.

I have always achieved best result by just bumping the shoulder .001 to .002." This method provides as good of or better accuracy and case life than neck only sizing. Further, neck only sized cases eventually have to have the shoulder bumped anyway.

Hello all ! I just found this forum and I like what I see so far.
I started loading for my 300 WSM using my once-fired Fusion brass. I had the same problem with loose primer pockets. Some primers just fell out on the first reload. I would recommend buying some higher quallity brass. I bought some new Winchester brass and had to do a lot of sorting by weight, due to a large variance from case to case. I'll be buying Norma brass next time. I got a little obsessed with accuracy on this one, and do a lot of match prep stuff, minus neck-turning. I trim after every firing, just to be safe, and set my full-length sizer die a little short, where it just bumps the shoulder. They are a little snug, but not enough to make chambering difficult.
