need .308 reloading info
 

Hey.
I have a Remington model 7 in the .308 caliber. I would like to reload 150 grain bullets for this gun. was wondering what would be the best powder to start with. also will powder burn rate make a difference because it has the shorter 20 inch barrel. thanks. Steve

I'm not really sure barrel length is that big of an issue with rifles, although I have found with pistols that faster powders tend to do better with the snub-nosed barrels.

With that in mind, powders like Win 748, Hod BL-C(2), or even Ramshot TAC are on the faster end of the spectrum for good .308 loads. 4895 and 4064 are perenial favorites for .308 as well, and Varget is gaining a good following as is Reloader 15.

In a bolt gun, you have a lot more powder options than the semi-autos do, so just about any powder on the burn scale from 748 to Reloader 15 will work...................it's just a matter of finding the best for you.

IMR 4895 is what my friend is reloading .308 with right now, and we've been getting very consistent velocities with it. Also worked beautifully for .300 Savage the other week.

My favorite load for the 150 gr. is H4895 loaded in Winchester brass with Fed. GM210M primers. Very accurate and reliable load.

748, 4064, 4895, there are so many powders that will work well for the 308. As far as the barrel length goes you load the cartridge not the barrel.

Winchester 748, Varget, 4064, 4895. Those are just a few that work well in a .308. In my short 3 years experience with reloading though, Varget and IMR 4064 are 2 of the most universal powders available. I am sure that there are others, but those are the ones that I am most familiar with. Winchester 748 and 760 are a close 2nd for me, but they tend to burn a bit dirtier.

About 40 years ago i did a lot of load development using the powders then available. Settled on IMR 3031 for my .308 150 grain bullet loads. Have never looked back and see no reason to change now.
