Either one is most likely a best fit for your XL7-270. What is your bullet choice? I picked up some H4831 with the Sierra GK-130 gr a few weeks ago and need to work up some loads. I would also like to try handloading up some Rem Core Lokt 130 gr. I have a Rem 7600 pump in .270 that favors these Core Lokts.

Another load to try is H4831sc with the 130gr. or 140gr. Nosler Accubond bullets.

H4831 has always been a good powder for the 270 Win. But the SC version would be better because you can get more of it into the case, and it meters better through a powder measure as well. I would use the SC version. It's performance is identical to H4831, just has smaller grains.

IMR 4831 is a bit faster, and it only comes with the big grains. It would work OK, but I prefer IMR 4350 in the 270Win. (Hodgdon now owns IMR as well.)

Only difference is that the cylindrical grains are cut shorter. The burn rate and other properties are the same. It will flow through a powder measure easier (less bridging and more consistent weights per throw). The biggest advantage I see is that it also will take up less space in the case. This is great when loading slow burning powder into a big case where load density is 100% or greater with the standard cut version. The short cut will fill less space letting you get more in the case before you start to really compress the charge.

hey eldequello i have been looking for powders boy they are scarce here in ky. I have found some imr4831 though that is why I asked about it. Do you think that I could work up a load with the imr 4831? I have located everything component wise with the excetpion of bullets and I am working on those.

thanks chris

The I4831 will most definitely work in the 270. Make sure that you use data for the IMR powder though. Like has been said it has a slightly faster burn rate than the h4831.
