reloading press....

ok...with the way things are going right now, i think stock piling bullets, primers, cases, and powder would be a decent idea to start rolling my own loads...cant even find factory loads...if you can price is getting ridiculous for basic stuff that goes bang and throws a bullet downrange....

mainly looking at pistol ammo since i shoot it in the most volume. but 223 ammo for the ARs, 7.62x.39 for AKs, 308 for L1A1s, 3006 for hunting, 22-250 for long range varmint hunitng etc could also be reloaded once i get into it.

i just dont understand the different presses and such...

im figuring for the 3006 and 22-250 i might use a different method to reload them since accuracy is more critical than the high volume rifle and pistol rounds where sub-moa wont be noticed...i dont know...

thats what im trying to ask but cant spit out the words lol....with knowing what you know, what kind of press would i need? im not talking millions of rounds a year...and dont have to put out 1000 rounds an hour or anything super quick...but dont think i wanna be funneling powder into pistol cases and doing it the very slow way...my arm works, i dont think i need a hydrolic foot lever(reloaded shotshell at my buddies place and he has his setup on hydrolics...slick, but i dont think i need something THAT advanced)

maybe a couple hundred rounds a month...

any thoughts on the best route that would get me the press(es) i need? i really wanna reload accurate stuff for the 22-250 and 30-06...and would atleast like to do volume pistol ammo and the volume rifle ammo would be a nice bonus so my toys can get shot a little more often....im at the point now where i got the toys, just cant afford the ammo and cant FIND the ammo anymore...i know i wont save a ton by reloading, but i will beable to roll my own when i want them and will save some...got tons of brass already saved...the big thing is being able to make my own ammo so i have it....

I started with the RCBS Rock Chucker and still use it today, I have purchaced a Lee Pro 1000 for my pistol and .223 plinking rounds, but still use the Rock Chucker for hunting and competition shooting. With that being said though!, now is not a good time to get into reloading either, components have dried up just as much as the ammo, also, equipment is hard to get. If I were to start over, I would look for used stuffat the gun shows, local papers and check out estate sales.

thanx guys....

devil dog, i know even reloading stuff is hard to find right now...

i wont be shopping till summer or fall...just trying to learn and start looking at different things so when im ready to shop i know what im looking for. i like to be knowledgeable and shop around and understand what im looking at and such...ive jumped right into other hobbies and ended up spending 3x what i needed to buying junk and buying stuff i didnt need etc...

i NEED to start reloading for my 22-250 atleast...factory ammo is starting to hold me back as i reach out...those 1" groups at 100yds are 3" groups at 300....

and if i slowly start stockpiling components here and there as i find them, i can be set for a good long while...where as if i dont get into reloading, i'll be lucky to be able to shoot! i dont know how it is in other parts of the country, but finding ammo right now around here is tough...pistol ammo is almost impossible...

between supply being somewhat limited, the whole scare factor is just insane...gun shops are loving it...but its killing me...

actually going to look into 22 conversion kits for the pistols just so i can train and keep shooting them...pricey, but i can burn thousands of 22 shells and still train with the same pistols that i carry...only thing thats stopping me is accuracy and reliability...i do own a buckmark 22 that ive been shooting alot just to shoot a pistol...but it just aint the same as shooting my sig's and glocks...

this whole scare is kinda crazy...supply is dwindling and prices are sky rocketing...i hope it ends....sooner or later it gotta end....or the scare will be reality....we shall see....

Despitebeing a PITA about gun stuff, you can still find reloading tools, (presses, dies, scales, etc.) on E-bay. No components, however.

RE: reloading press....

do presses wear out?? how much a risk would it be to buy a used one? assuming the used one is a good one to start out with??

im sure i can probably get lucky and snag one that was hardly touched...but you never know if you got the ebay or gun sale route...

are they something that can just be "shot" and garbage after so long? the ones ive used seemed very sturdy and durable...but just checking...i wont be buying for a while yet, just curious while were on the subject....

i just got home from college for the weekend and dad was ranting about ammo...cant find pistol ammo...i thought he saved all his pistol brass and he told me he been tossing it...he had a guy that would buy them for a while then the past few years he quit buying it so dad had no use for it...hes going to start saving it again...i WILL get into reloading...

i been looking online and midway and cabelas is very limited and out of stock on alot of stuff....but i think it will be a good investment for me....i know i wont save a ton of cash but i can load better ammo than the dirt cheap stuff for a comparable price...even the wolf ammo and dirt cheap stuff isnt so cheap anymore and is a bear to find....the days of 100$ cases are probably over...the days of going to camp for the weekend with 1000 rounds of various ammo and coming home with none is probably over....

but i think if i start loading my own i can slowly find components here and there and stock up so i will always have my own supply so when i want to shoot i can go shoot...

dad said he been hunting 40s&w ammo and cant find it anywhere right now...i looked for 2 weeks and couldnt find it either...

hope things change...its ugly....

glad i know how to shoot a flintlock!! maybe i better learn to cast my own balls and bullets and make my own black powder just so i can always hunt...

I bought my Rock Chucker 23 years ago and still going strong. I dont think you can wear one out.

I have been using the rockchucker for years, and it has never failed to perform. RCBS warranty is forever. If a problem develops, send it back to the factory, and they will repair or replace at no cost to you. Enjoy!

RE: reloading press....

I have an RCBS Jr press I got in the mid seventies that still makes excellent ammo.

Unfortunately you should have started this quest a year ago as loading components and equip are more difficult to find these days. Those of us that have years of doing this have seen the "knee jerk" reaction to shortages and hoarding of available components before. In the past it did pass...who knows this time. If it passes buy plenty because no doubt it will happen again.

For different calibres it is more convenient to use such press.
