pre-64 model 70 300H&H Mag bullet weight

I have a Winchester pre-64 Model 70 in 300 H&H Magnum I hand load for. It is extremely accurate with 69gr Norma MRP and Hornaday 150grSPBT Interlock. It came with a vintage 1950's Weaver K6 scope euro-style postreticle. I want to go to a heavier bullet for hunting elk without loosing accuracy. What bullet weightwas the rifling designed for? What's everyone's personal preferance for bullet weight?

Bud, like any load, you are just gonna have to try a couple of different brands/ weights and charges to see what that ole classic likes. The one I have likes 180 Noslers and H4831...won't go into weights...but they are not max loads.I don't shoot mine much any more....worth more in the safe.

hicap, i have a old remington 721 300 H&H and i usually shoot 165 grain bullets out of it. it will shoot 180 grains just as well with a little adjustment to the scope. as longknife said, powder and bullet weights have to be played with to find out what the rifle likes. good luck.

Thanks for the good tips. I loaded some once fired brass with Hornady 180gr RN Interlock and as soon as the weather improves I can go test them out.

The 300 H&H was offered with 150, 180, and 220 grain bullets in American made factory ammo. But I would use a 200-grain Nosler Partition in it for elk. You can probably work this up to 2900-3000 FPS using MRP......good luck on the elk hunt!!
