Should I be crimping?
I have been loading 180 ge. SST's in my 300 wby and have gotten good results. It is shooting sub-moa and as low as .577 on time. I am looking to bring it down to 1/2'' though (I know I'm being anal). So far I have not crimped any of my reloads, but would it help accuracy if I did?

Crimping seems to change velocity and pressure more than anything else. If you do crimp, use a lee factory die as its easy to adjust the amount of crimp.

Thanks guys that is what I thought. I was just curious I have a crimp die that came with the set I bought and thought maybe I should. It shoots about 3/4" as is I just want to trim off that other 1/4". I still have less then 100 down the tube so it may tighten up as it gets used more.

Well I guess we all have different opinions. Crimping may or may not improve your accuracy. I've had it work with some rifles but not others. The Lee factory die only cost about $8 so its not like its going to break you to see if you can mill that extra 1/10" out of your load.
The theory is that a crimp give the bullet a consistant starting pressure. Does it work? You will have to be the judge. I crimp some loads for some rifles but mostly I don't bother. |

I don't crimp any of my loads for my bolt action rifles.

try it and see...youve already got the equipment, and it only takes a few seconds to do...run a batch of ten and compare your shot groups...

There's not much that i crimp either... In fact, doing so can open a whole other can of worms... Many times there's no canlure where it would be crimped, and if there isn't you chance damageing the bullet, there's bullet cup spring back and a host of other problems...
It's a waste of time on all but the few cartridges that really need it... DM |
