.308 and 30-06 bullets. lets say a friend of mine does reloading, and he offered to reload some bullets for me. well... because im a n00b, and dummy i dont know jack sh*% about reloading. so.. basically im asking. if i were to goto a local retailer or online retailer what "bullet" would i buy in Hornady brand for the .308 and which one for the .30-06 ? assuming i have the brass and dies and all the other essentials. besides getting into grains. just the basic bullet. thanks all

First of all, if he doesn't have a ammo mfg liscense, it's against the law for him to load them for you.... You CAN go over to his house and have him show you how to load your own, with you doing the loading...

As for what bullet.... That depends on what your going to use them for???

For a 308 or 30-06,and you just want to make holes in paper, any .308" bullet will do. Just buythe cheapest 150 grain bullets you can find, and learn how to load them. Then you can get some target practise in with the ammo...

Sounds like a win, win situation to me!

RE: .308 & 30-06 Bullets ???

The 308 Winchester is a cartridge. The 30-06 Springfield is also a cartridge. A cartridge consists of a brass case of specific size and shape, a primer, powder and a bullet. Both of these cartridges use a 30 caliber or .308 bullets. Note the first two numbers of the cartridge name, 308 and 30-06, 30 caliber. As is the 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, 30-30, 300 Weatherby Magnum , so on and so on.

So, what bullet? Pick one, http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/BrowseProducts.aspx?&tabId=19&categoryId=1 7540&categoryString=652***19785***9016***7243* **&brandId=1165
If you are going to hunt with these bullets do not use FMJ or full metal jackets. If you want one bullet for both cartridges I would go with a 165gr Interlock.

If you are going to get two different bullets I would go 150gr for the 308 Winchester and 180gr for the 30-06.

RE: .308 & 30-06 Bullets ???

Never load a bulletfor a firearm with a tubular magazine with a spitzer or pointed type bullet. The recoil or a jar of the rifle can cause the rouns in the magazine to be fired. Example - a 30-30 is also a .308 diameter, but they use special flat nosed or rounded nosed (with soft lead exposed at the bullet end) bullets. Hornady makes a special round for these cartridges with a special cushion tip.

RE: .308 & 30-06 Bullets ???

If you want one bullet to load both then you should try the .308" 165 gr Spire point by Hornady.
That being said, you may get lucky and this bullet will shoot accurately out of both rifles. The trouble is that rifles are like women, it takes different things to 'turn them on'. Your '06 may like 180 gr bullets and your 308 may like 150 grainers. But you won't know this until you begin to experiment.
For deer size game, anything from the 150 - 180 gr range will work for you.
