You should try a heavier bullet. 210 berger, 220 or a 240 SMK. H1000, H870 if you can find it or WC872 which is military surplus. Plenty of it out there and very affordable. WC872 is very close to the burn rate of H870. start low and work up. That RUM will start singing. You'll need a 10 twist for the 240's.

Why use these heavy bullets for deer?????

As for the question, every 300ultra I have had or tried, which has been 4 of em has liked 180gr accubond and 94gr of H1000. Not a screamer of a load, but for some reason, it shoots. I have had great luck also with 80gr of RL25 and 180gr barnes TSX. I have several others that shot well. But I liked the accubond load the best.

Go to RL25. I had better luck in the 300 RUM's we load for with RL25. IMO RL22 is a bit too fast.

We shot 165 grain Nosler BT's(for deer), and 200 grain Sierra(for elk)hunting bullets. Both bullets performed flawlessly.

I am not knocking the expensive bullets, but with the performance the 300 RUM gives you, I see no need for the expensive bullets. A 165 Sierra or Nosler BT will perform flawlessly on a deer out of the 300 RUM, at distances that most of us are not able to shoot at.

I do not want to post how much RL25 we loaded, because the load was hot. However the cartridge and rifle is truly a PERFORMANCE machine. The 300 RUM is the big dog, so fill that baby up and let the big dog eat. Tom.

Why use these heavy bullets for deer?????

The same can be said for a 300 RUM!

I like the heavy bullets because of performance. The bullets I mentioned all have a high BC which equates to better down range energy, less drag and less wind drift. All that equals better accuracy. The performance of a 300 RUM is just begging to use heavy bullets. I guess if you buy a RUM you didn't buy it because the ammo was cheap in the first place

Even if you compare a 180gr kicking at 3300fps with a conservatively low BC of .4 to a 220gr kicking at 2950fps with a high BC of .52, you still have TOF (time of flight) less with the 180gr bullet at 500 yards. You only see TOF better for the 220gr mk at 1000 yards with only mildly better wind drift. Put it in your bullistics calculator and see.

Wow, I envy your gun budget. 4 ultras since the accubond came out?

Some day I'll get my house in order, then I'll buy more guns, if they are still legal.

Actually I am lying a little. I have only shot the accubond in 1 ultra. It was a custom I had built. I then suggested to Charlie (mossyoak33) that he try it it, and shot litterly .4MOA all day. I was shooting 180gr bullistic tips before accubond came out.

Obviously you failed to read the entire first post,or you would have read.

Heavier bullets will offer no ballistic advantage at 300 yards.

I use the 180gr tsx in front of R-25 to develop 3380fps in my rifles. The 180gr ballistic tip also works very well with R-25 in my rifles.
