bulky 7mag powder 4 heavy bullet
Ive only loaded for a few different calibers so I havent tried many different powders but it looks like IMR4064 is among the bulkiest judging by dipper size. vs grains.
For my 7 RM I would like to use as light a charge, while filling up the case as much as possible. Im guessing this may cut down recoil while getting as more shots per lbs? Is this correct? Do you have a better powder suggestion? I have a bunch of speer HC 160s leftover and would like to use those but I dont see a load for it w/ 4064 in my book. anyone have a load? |
RE: bulky 7mag powder 4 heavy bullet
My Nosler #4 manual lists 4064 for the 160 partition...
Minimum charge is 49.0 and max is 53.0.. However, 4064 is the fastest powder listed and the load density is the lowest ( 61 to 66 %).. 4064 is a pretty fast burner to be using in a big belted case...Putting too much of it in there is a good way to set up a bolt, or worse...I've seen it happen .. I really think you'd be better served to stick to slower burners for heavier bullets in the 7mm RM, like RL-22, RL 25, 4831 or 7828, and save the 4064 for medium capacity , non-overbore cases like the .308... Good luck.... |

Yeah, I think your right. Ill try the reloder 22 , the staring load is about the same velocity the 4064 max load w/ only about 6 more grains of powder, and probably better accuracy.
Thanks |

I use to load hodgen 870, my 7mm rem mag loved that powder, cant buy it any longer as far as i know.It was greatand it didnt cost mucheither. I started using RL 22 and its shoots great to. I cant remember off hand how many grains I use as im at work and my book is at home.

RE: bulky 7mag powder 4 heavy bullet
It's quite simple why you find no loads for the 7 Mag. using IMR 4064-that powder is too fast for the big case. I suppose you could use light loads of it in the 7 Mag., but it doesn't fill up the case very well before you get to maximum, so accuracy might not be too good.
