Tell me about Varget powder

All,

Just started reloading last year. Have worked up pretty good loads with Varget in my .243 and .270. Have some .22-250 loads made up but haven't test fired them yet, and have a new .30-06 barrel under the Christmas tree for my encore. So far I've liked the accuracy that I've achieved with this powder, but was curious why I don't see more press about this powder on the forum. I've noticed a narrower reloading range compared to other powders, but that can't be the only reason. Is it a newer powder and everyone is just stuck in their old ways? Just curious.

RE: Tell me about Varget powder

Varget is the powder that I choose to stock in bulk. 223,308,and 45/70 are just three of the calibers I use this powder for.
It may not be the top preformer in any of them but I find more thanadaquate performance in my choice of loads, with some of the most accurate of any powder available!

Varget is fairly fast burning and is at its best in the 308. Many of the 308, and 06 based cases perform best with slower powders. Not to say it is not accurate in the 243 and 270 just that a limited powder charge will reduce velocities. Those cases are typically loaded with 4831 or similar burn rate powders.

A good all around powder. I use it in 30-30, 308, 270, 30.06, 243, and others. Next to 4064 and Win 748 it is one of the most versatile powders out there. It may not give the best accuracy or the top velocities in any one given load, but for the 100 yards and under that I mostly shoot the animals really don't know the difference.

IMO, VARGET is a great accuracy/velocity powder in a case slightly larger than 223. In 223, it does well, but the extremely compressed loads will leave you struggling at the highest charge weights and light bulletsto get the powder in the case. Also, it is a stick powder, so it doesn't throw real well. Frankly, the per stick weight must be light enough that it can throw pretty close. I say this because I have checked thrown charges and they were not off as much as I see with H4831 or R19. Still, I think my thrown charges varied +/- .2 grains, which is a lot, IMO.

Although I've tried it in my 7-08 I couln't get it to shoot worth a hoot, even with several different bullet brands and weights. Some people like it just fine.

Great powder for308, 7mm08, or even 243. I have also had limited success ina 270win. I have tried it in the45-70 and 30-30 and really doens'thave the speed I get with other powders. It was way too compressed for my 204ruger. 223, its a goto powder.

Definately up there with4350 for versitility.

Like most have said it is good powder. I use it in my 223 when bulk loading for the 'black rifle'. Easy to judge the amt of powder when throwing itas my load of 26 gr comes just to the base of the neck.
That is about all I use it for though. I prefer H4198 in my 45-70 and IMR4064 in the '06. Other rifles take different powders. I guess there is no one perfect powder. That must be why they make so many.

I use reloder 15 in my 7-08, its almost identical to varget but you get almost the same performance, w/ a little less powder which cuts down recoil and reloading costs a little.

I actually use it in my 7mag too, to make cheap and light recoil loads.

I'd say that Varget is the powder of choice for most of the NRA High Power shooters that shoot the .223 (damn near all of 'em) and the .308 (fewer and fewer[:o]).
