Default Primers

I have a question foryouhandloaders. I have always used Winchester large rifle magnum primers for my 308, 30-06 and 300WSM. I have always had good sucess with them, but I can't find any around my area MPLS
If I switch to another kind like CCI will it affect accuracy? And will they work in cold weather?
Thx

My rule of thumb is only use a magnum primer if you need it. So I would defiately drop down to a WLR or Fed 210 for the 308 and 30-06. I have had very poor luck with mid burning powders like 4064 and varget and even 4350 with mag primers. Powders like RL25 and H1000, and Retumbo, I require a magnum primer.

Have you checked with Johnboy's shop....the Gunstop?
John can tell you where to get them if they're available.

See his website www.gunstop.com for more info

My rule of thumb is only use a magnum primer if you need it.
Generally I concurr with this.....using a LR primer should have no negative consequences at all.

Thx, I did call the Gunstop rightbefore Christmas and I was able to pick up a 1000. Also after doing some research I found that magnum primersare recomended for ball powder in cold weather.

Winchester is certainly a fine primer. . .I use them exclusively for pistol. For rifle, I prefer Federal. They are generally considered more powerful and more consistent. For my AR, I use CCI. I would rather use CCI #41 military, but they are not available locally.

Basically primers are interchangable, but I would load a couple and reconfirm. Chances are you may need to work up a new powder charge for ideal accuracy and velocity.

Be very carefull changeing primers in a ginen load. Especially in a near maxium load as the primer can add a couple thousand psi. to that load.
