I like em both.....I eat one with sugar and milk for breakfast and the other I snack on the rest of the day.....lots of energy in them too.

If I' m loading for shotgun it would be Blue Dot as my #1 choice. And it also depends on the load. Could talk about this one all day long.

RE: Herco or Blue Dot?

This question was intended for shotgun. I went to buy some powder and asked the clerk what to use. I told him that my Dad liked Herco for huunting loads and Red Dot for trap. He said that my Dad must have been about his age because the people of an older generation had very good results from Herco and did not want to change. He then went on to inform me that the two are very compatible with minor differences. Mainly, the Blue Dot has a louder " bark" to it but less recoil. He recommended to me since I might be loading some heavier loads to try Blue Dot. I did, and I like it.

Your opinions?

I must be one of the old guys I' ve used herco for heavy field loads for yrs. and red dot for trap and light field loads. I' m sure blue dot is fine but I' ve had no reason to change.

RE: Herco or Blue Dot?

go here and read the data
http://recipes.alliantpowder.com/rg....auge=12&step=1

please forgive my previous two posts.....when someone tells me that this powder has a louder bark.......well.....here' s what you need...this is to alliant powders website and you can see for your self what the differences are.

Both can also be used for a magnum revolver powder.....I use Blue dot for all my heavy magnum shot shell and revolver loads except I use IMR 800-x in my 20 Ga.

For upland bird hunting with a 12 Ga either powder will do the trick.....just read the data and pick the powder that mostly does what you want it to do.

Regarding recoil.....the chamber psi is not relevant to recoil.....assuming a fixed gun....lets say a Remington 870, the factors that lead to felt recoil are two things only
1. The total weight of the ejecta....this means the weight of the BBs and the wad and the powder.
2. the velocity with which the ejecta leave the muzzle.

Regarding noise....the noise is a direct reflection of the chamber pressure as the ejecta is leaving the barrel
