Load for Bobcats with 22-250

We went deer hunting and seen a number of bobcats on the propoerty we hunt on. I have been shooting the cheaper 45 JHP @4000fps. I am pretty sure thats going to blow the heck out of a cat. Anyone have a loads that they have used without alot of damage? Around that 3000-3200 fps?

RE: Load for Bobcats with 22-250

I don't have the specific loads anymore, been 30 years since I had a 22-250 but recall goinga coupleways for cat's. First was a 45 grain Hornady SX bullet running around 3300,really creams a cat. Total disintegration, but took place well within the hide, didn't destroy the pelt. Don't push the 45 SX much faster or it won't make it to the target, has a very thin jacket, almost like heavy foil and vaporizes shortly after leaving the muzzle. Anotherround was a full house load with a 55 grain Hornady FMJ. Pencil sized hole in and out without tearing 'em up too bad. Again, no notes on powders/velocities but you can work up your own numbers. Not sure where you hunt, but here in WI, not many cats left and tags are hard to come by.

Its an unlimited number to be taken here. Just have to be taged by the local concervation officer. I was toying with the FMJ idea but I am not a big fan of diggin into the bush to pull one back out.

I would go with a bullet that is a little heavier constructed so as it punches through and through, but still expands to around twice the diameter. Give sierra or hornaday55gr soft points a try.
