RE: how many rounds do you carry when hunting?

When hunting with my ML, I have one in the barrel and 2 or 3 more charges in my pocket. I've never used more that 2 shots in any one session. When I go up to Minnesota next Friday for rifle season, I'll probably just carry a full mag of 4 rounds with me in the stand, with a couple boxes in the truck. I figure that if I shoot all 4 in one session, I'll have plenty of time to walk back to the truck to get reloads, because the deer will be dead or long gone anyway.

I've got one of those cheezy rifle stock sleeves that hold 9 rounds. Not that I'll ever need 9, but that's what they had at Walmart for $4 so I bought it and figure if I have the space to carry 9 right on the gun why not?

Rifle: 8; five in the rifle and 3 in a case, in case. Haven't used more than 1 in a long time.

ML: 4; one loaded 3 in speed loader and 10 caps in a inline capper.

I usually carry at least 5 for the bolt action. 3 or 4 in the mag, plus one or two in my pocket. With the 30-30 I usually load 5 or 6 in the tube. I figure that it is very rare to ever get more than 2 shots off, but if I miss clean I want a chance at another since I am going to finish my walk anyways. Around here the deer are shot at so much that you cant rule out seeing another on the way back to the house...

8 for me too. Load the gun and the rest in the pack or pocket. The reason I like to carry extras is not so much if I miss but for emergency situations. They could come in handy.

Usually too many. I don't recall ever needing more than 2 in close to 45 years. And now, with 2 way radios - you don't even need some for the 3 shot emergency signal. But that 3 shot rule is nonsense anyway. I tried it with my bow onec and no one came to help me.

I asked my pal the same question as we packed up for our second day of the elk hunt. He said 10, so I justified leaving the cartridge wallet in the truck for the day and taking just 10 on my gun. I shot a muley with two and then six more into a bull elk (when they could take off across the mountain, I shoot until they go down!). I felt awfully vulnerable with just 2 rounds left since the elk went down behind a tree and we did not know he was dead for sure...next time I'm taking a few more!

If it were a short walk back to the truck I would not carry that many but 8 miles into back country it matters more.

I carry 10 because that's how many my little folding belt cartridge thingy holds...

Back in the boonies I'll carry another five in my pack wrapped in tape..Just in case...

When turkey hunting, I always carry 7... Never need half that many, but that's my lucky number for turkey hunting.....;)....

Wow I'm an over killer . I have a Hunter wallet holds 20 . 4 in my rifle 16 in the case . On some of the hunts I've been on it might take days to get out with just a rolled ankle much less hurt and an over nighter with a kill in cat country , well you get it . I pack 25 when I go out with the SA 45 , 5 and 20 .

I carry six. One in my pocket to load the rifle with. Five on a cartridge slide on the buttstock (Ruger No. 1).

Well, here's what i carry on extended hunts that i may run into anything?? Small game? Big game? birds? Who knows...

The 10 stays in camp, and the ammo carrier goes in my pack. The rest are the same as a day hunt...

For day hunts, like deer hunting, i just carry one in the bbl, and the 5 on the far left... The loose one goes in one pocket, and the 4 go in another pocket...

RE: how many rounds do you carry when hunting?

I always have 14 with me, 4 in the gun (3+1) and my belt pack holds 10. I'd probably take a few more as I've seen personally people who hunt with 5 or 7 that have shot an elk and not killed it due to misjudging the distance and hitting them poorly. This was my brother-in-law who always heart shot every animal I've ever seen him take, but last year he over-estimated and shot high, hitting it once then burning his 6 other shells trying to finish it.

So, don't think just because you've always only needed 1 that some day you may not want more. I think good advice would be to take as many as your gun holds plus enough for at least 1 complete reload. 2 complete reloads would be better. I know I've used up to 6 bullets to finish an elk in the past so better to have a few extra than 1 short and watch that animal get away to feed the coyotes.
