bullets for 270?
what is the best bullet in 270 caliber for mule deer or elk ? this is assuming you do not think the 270 is
is to small for elk. thanks for the information. |
RE: bullets for 270?
I am a Nosler fan so I would go with the 140 grain Accubond. I have some loaded for elk as my backup.

RE: bullets for 270?
You may want to give the 140 grain accubond a try. The 150 and 160 grain Partitions of are also great rounds if you like the heavier stuff

RE: bullets for 270?
I would use the 140 gr. accubond or the 160 gr. partitions

RE: bullets for 270?
My 270's (Mossberg 810 & Remington 700 Mtn) always shoot noslers really well. I haven't tried the accubonds but the 140 grain balistic tips shoot nice tight groups. If the accubonds shoot as well that should be good for elk, the balsitic tips have done me good for deer in the past.

harrell
I have been shooting and reloading 270 win for what seems like 100's of years. I also hunt deer and elk with the gun and it has harvested it's fair share of each. I am a Nosler fan also, but I have only shot partitions from the gun while elk hunting. But, I shoot the 130 grain variety - if you look up the ballistics on the 130 with the velocity you are able to achieve - I think you will see the advantage. 3000fps and 2597 lbs of energy @ the muzzle 2791fps and 2233 lbs @ 100 2565fps and 1900 lbs @ 200 |
RE: bullets for 270?
I have to agree with Sabot, I didn't think a 270 would shoot anything other than a 130 grainer

RE: bullets for 270?
Are any of you guys fans of the the Hornady SST's? I used the 130 grain SST in .270 caliber (light magnum) this weekend and it did a number on the whitetails I shot. The expansion was unbelievable, the exit wound on both of the doe's I shot where big enough I could almost put my hand through it. I've never shot a nosler through my .270, has anyone compared the SST's with the noslers as far as expansion?
|
RE: bullets for 270?
Haven't shot the SSTs or Partitions but the 140gr Accubond has put quite a bit of venison in my freezer with little to no tracking involved.
|
RE: bullets for 270?
I've tried the SSTs in several calibers and just can not get them to shoot well out of my rifles.
My 270 just loves the Nosler 130 gr Ballistic Tip and the Sierra Game King SPBT 130 gr. And I agree - the 130 gr bullet IS the only bullet for the 270. |
RE: bullets for 270?
i've killed around a 175 whitetails with 140 grn hornady and seirra bullets in my 270's .

RE: bullets for 270?
I have been shooting the 140 grain Hornady out of the 270 for a while (years). They are extremely accurate. I have a few thousand of the 130 grain silvertip, and have applied them to elk with spectacular results. Recovered weight is 94 grains. I have not tried the accubonds, and probably never will. I have enough partitions and other designs to keep me going for a long time. I sold the 270 win and went to the 270 weatherby, and have never looked back. |
RE: bullets for 270?
I've been thinking of getting into reloading also and shoot a 270. I haven't seen anyone mention Barnes yet. I buddy of mine use Barnes Triple shocksand really likes them. anyone use these?
|
RE: bullets for 270?
Many elk have fallen to the .270. The best ballistic coefficient dictates a 140 grain bullet for caliber. Of Course the Barnes bullets are an exception. Find the bullet you want to use and try as many powders as you can. You will find a powder that pushes that bullet well. Mulies and Elk are both bigger animals than a whiteail, so I would suggest a heavier bullet also. 150 grain at least. Premium bullet advised. That said many have fallen to Remington PSP's off the shelf. If I was spending money on a hunt I would spend the extra cha ching for a premium though. Cheap insurance.

RE: bullets for 270?
Nosler Partition in 140-150 gr or the 140gr Accubond.
Hornady 140gr Inter LockSpire point BTor 150g interlock spire point. Remington 140gr CoreLokt Ultra (bonded). These will all work one elk and deer. Use which is more accurate in you gun I would lean toward the 150 partition but either the 140gr Accubond or Interlock will do the job just fine. Unless you have a gun that doesn't like 140-150gr bullets I see no use for the 130 bullet weight but mine likes the 140-150 grainers just fine. |

RE: bullets for 270?
I have been reloading for 15 years. I like the sierra spitzer boat tail 150 gr. , but you have to find out what works in your gun. Good luck.

My 270 Win Load
140 Accubond and 58.0 of Reloader 22 Fed 210M Primers in FC Nickle Cases |
RE: bullets for 270?
I have been impressed with the 130 gr. sierra boattail and this season i used the winchester silver tip both have opened up and the hole in and out of the cavity is massive . longest shot 170 and deer dropped. One accurate bullet.
