Range Report (Better Trigger)

Well I posted on my first set of loads a month ago and that even though I shot 2'' groups I felt like they had potential, because of my heavy trigger. I had my trigger reduced to 3 pounds or so this week and went back at it yesterday evening. The trigger job is the best money I have spent on that gun. Because of itmy Rugercan now shoot Sub-MOA.

The best load last time gave me two inch groups it was a 130gr Gameking over 59.2gr 4831sc and a COAL of 3.235.

My two best this time were with 59.2gr 4831sc and a COAL of 3.290, .020 of the lands and gave me a group of .690.
Next was 59.4gr 4831sc and COAL of 3.235 and gave me a group of .983 from a hot barrel.

So can anyone give me an "estimate" of my velocity. I dont have a chrono yet. The manuel says the 59.2 should be going at 3100 fps in 24'' barrel. I figure I am going about 3000 fps.

I did make one mistake in my reloading though. I set a bullet in the case and didn't realize that I hadn't put any powder in the cas yet. It took me 30 min. to get the bullet out of the barrel after only the primer went off.

Ruger, glad you got the trigger job and you're shooting has improved. Sorry about the missed powder problem.
That is one reason I only load when I am not distracted, weigh each charge on my scale, and double check each case in the loading block prior to seating bullets. This verifies that each case has powder and the powder level is all at the same height. Mark this step on you to do list when reloading.

Looks good! Question, were you aiming at the same point with both the 59.2 and 59.4 loads? Looks to me that the POI on the paper is way different.

I was aiming at the bullzeye but at the beginging of the session my scope was off so I was making small adjustments between groups. My final group was with the 59.2 laod and was 2'' high giving me the zero I wanted.

RUGER,

I too have been working up some loads on the 130 grain gameking in a .270 ruger MKII. I started on the IMR 4831, but was grouping between 1.25" to 2" across the suggested range. I cracked open a bottle of Varget the other day, and figured I'd give it a try. The 130 grain gameking over 45.0 grains of Varget were giving me around 0.8" groups of 3 and 1.1" groups of five, so I think I'm onto something. This gun has never given me very tight groups, so I was pretty excited with the results. Best of luck.
