Heavy 30-06 loads

I was doing some looking and reading. I saw that the Hawk bullet company makes a 250gr. 30 cal. bullet. I found load data for a 250gr original Barnes 30-06 load that would do around 2200fps or slightly better. My question is, has any one used the Hawk or any other 250gr bullet in the 30-06 and where did they get their load info? I'm just curious what my rifle can do with this load. By the way, on the Hawk web page. They have a referance to an article in Feald&Stream by Dave Petzle. He is talking about using these bullets in the 30-06. But it only gives a blurb and i cant find the story. Any ideas there?

I doub't your gun wil stabalize a 250 grain bullet. Check the twist of the rifling before you spend the money on the bullets. You might get away with an 11 twist but probably need a 10 twist.

why bother? in a .30-06?

180, 200, 220grs are plenty...if you want to go on the "heavy side"

Why not?? I was wondering mainly because i could. I mean Barnes made and Hawk nowmakesthe bullets, and Hogdon has the data.

Crew you will need to check your rifles twist rate. Most 06 rifles have 1 in 10. For a 250 grain bullet to stabilize in a 06, with a 1 in 10 twist rate, and 2,200 FPS velocity is not very likely. I am not familiar with that bullet but I would check to see if they will recommend a minimum twist rate. To have any chance of working it would have to a shorter round nose design with a flat back and a very dense material like lead or heavier.

........Would the Greenhill formula not give a good idea of possibility once his actual twist is known? Use the formula and then compare the result to the actual twist rate in the gun......

Crew - Unless you are going after some really big stuff at close range, like the previous post suggests, you are better off with a good 180 bullet. It is awfully hard to beat the ballistics of a 180 gr .308 boat tail bullet.
And if you are going after more than what the 180 gr bullet can quickly and humanely kill than you may wish to consider a larger chambering.

Doesn't sound like he cares if he "needs" them, just wants to try them. I'd get some load 'em up and shoot 'em. Ibet we'veall spent more time and money than crew will have invested, on things weneeded less. I know I have.

true cz, but isn't that the reason for the forum - to relate experiences and knowledge? Like RL stated, a 168 TSX or 180 Partition is pretty darn good.
If our boy wants to try them then let him have at it. He says he is curious what his rifle will do with that load. And we are basically telling him that, except for point blank, a good 165 or 180 will do a better job.
