165 gr. Sierra
 

I will be loading a .300 WSM for hunting deer on power line right-of-ways and clear cuts. The deer run betwee 90-175 lbs. Shots can run from 30 yrds. to further than I am willing to shoot (over 400). Sierra recommends using their 165 gr. HPBT. I have experience with the 165 gr. Sierra SBT in .308 Winchester and have had satisfactory results from 25-225 yds. on deer. The loads suggested will run 2950-3100 fps. I am shoot a Browning Stalker which has a 23" barrel. Does anyone have experience or suggestions about using either of these bullets for my application?

Ive shot a few deer with sierra 160 gr hpbt' s out of a 7 mag and a 7x57 , and to me they are a little on the soft side somewhat like a ballistic tip. I tend to like bigger and tougher bullets though. None of the deer I shot with the sierras got away but I have seen some pretty poor performance with them when hitting bone. They tend to fly apart pretty easy.

A friend of mine used 165 gr. Sierra HPBT out of a 30-06 Sprg., and they blew up on a deer. He had to shoot the deer many times for it to die. I would choose a bullet with more integrity. Good luck.

Use the 165gr Sierra spbt Gameking. One of the most accurate deer bullets out there and very good performance on game. Should be just what you need for your application and in that caliber.
Hard to find a better long range deer bullet.

Thanks for all the input. I believe I will try the Sierra 165 gr. SBT and the Nosler 165 gr. BT and see which one shoots best. I have seen all the loading data on shortmags.org and that seems to be very helpful. Sierra bullets were not listed so Sierra sent me the loading info over the internet. They sure seem to be helpful folks. Thanks again.

I also used the 165 hpbt behind IMR 4895. I didnt like the performance of the 165 bullet on w/tail and dropped back to 150 serria spbt behind IMR4350 It worked great this year I will be staying with that load. Good Luck

P S I still use the Serria 160hpbt in my 7Mag It works great
