primers?
 

I got a question? can i use mag primers in a .45 or a .38 or a .40 . I know that you use a mag primer in .357mag and .44mag .Can i use a .44mag primer in a .45 or a .357mag primer in a .38 or a .40 . tell me your thoughts please.

Use the primer given in the reloading manual you are using. If the book says to use a magnum primer, or standard primer use it. Good luck.

Handloader 1 is right on the mark the use of mag primmers or standard can effect the burn rate and presure drastically. You can switch from one brand to another but you should work up the load again.

I MAY have used a magnum primer a time or two in a .357 or .44 mag., but as a rule I use standard primers in these also. But I don' t use much H110 or WW296, both of which may need the magnum primer more than Unique or 2400.

PaJack you know most of the time I would agree with that but recently I found the loads given in two different manuals have been incorrect . one manual gave the same velocities and powder charges for two different bullet weights . That is not possible and the other one was a overload according to a tech rep from another manufacturer. Thats why you should never start with the top loads first .

i will say something a little different. dont use mag primers in standard loads if you are starting out at the max.
now if you take a starting load and use a mag primer instead of a standard one, you should be fine. i actually use a mag primer in my 38spl load of 6.5gr of bluedot. why you ask, because it burns cleaner using the mag primer with the magnum powder.
dont blindly follow what the load manuals say, every gun is different and every reloader needs to use the head on there shoulders.
without tinkering there would be no 44mag because elmer keith wouldnt have pushed the limits of the 44spl.
now admittidly we might have had one but it would not have been til later. though since he wrote of the exploits with handguns we may not have, because of no interest by the public.
