RE: Best powder for 7mm-08

Sierra manuals list imr 4064 as the best powder for a hunting load with the 140gr bullet at 2800fps The most accurate powder with that bullet was 748 at 2700 fps ,this was out of the 12 powders tested .The only problem with that is your gun might not shoot the same or if you change bullet weights the powder can be different . These are only given as a reference .I hope this will help some .

I found that h4895 worked well in my rifles but that may not mean much as each gun is different and has it's own preference for what it likes.

I own several 7mm-08 and reload for family members. The best powder I found for all rifles that I reload for Remington,Savage and a Weatherby is IMR 4064. We all use the same bullet also,139gr Hornandy BTSP and 43.2 gr of powder. Accuracy is great with this load...<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

FVA,what load and bullet are you using in the 260 with IMR 4831?I am using 44.0 C&gt;&gt;imr 4831
and a rem core-loc 140 gr,bullet in my ruger, tack driver.I want to try the new Hornady SST's 129gr and Re 19 powder soon as I get some of the bullets

IMR 4350 and IMR 4831 have always been my favorite for .243 and are working great in my .260 rem. as well. IMR 4831 is my favorite and I think would give like results in a 7mm-08 as they are all based on the same case.

F4YG,
I have tried most of the powders indicated in the postings as well as several others. The two best powders I have found in my Rem. 700 and my daughters Win M-70 are the Winchester 760 and Hodgdon's Varget. All testing was with the 120, 130 and the 140 grain bullets. In the 140 grain we worked with the Sierra SBT, Nosler Ballistic tip as well as the Partition. These two powders were better than any other powder tested. Of the two, Varget gave better accuracy. I donot particularly like ball powders and the Varget burned a whole lot cleaner. Plus Varget is not sensitive to temperature changes. Over a three year period, averages of ten shots varied only 19 fps from the hotest to the coldest temperatures we had. That ranged from 100 degrees to the upper teens. The point of impact didnot vary at 100 yards. Because of these test results, I've switched all my loads to Hodgdon extruded powders. I hope that this is of some help. One more thing, in all the rifles I'm using Varget in, they all seem to like charges that are near or at the Hodgdon manuals maximum suggested load.
