Hornady Light Mag ammo

I was wondering if anyone has some ideas they can get this ammo on average 150 to 200 fps faster than standard velocites like 3000 fps for a 150 grain .308. and 3100 for a 150 grain 30-06.

I'm not a reloader, does hornady publish what powder they use etc....? or is that part of the kept secret?

If they do then that eliminates one place to look, if not, patented formulas etc......which create more power is one part of the equation.

one idea i have is if they use spherical powder, mayb emixing different size of spherical to creat less empty spaces......VOLUMEvoids.....but if that were the case I suppose yo ucan just take a part a round and discorver that.

I'm guessing they compress power to its limit maybe? and have a proprietary powder formula....

Well, number one, they cannot get it to go 150-200fps faster. I have chrono'd alot of it, and with a little tweaking of my loads, I can get thier velocity. But I never could get them to shoot worth crap. Don't waste your money.

According to Hornady's website they use a special blend of powders to achieve the published velocities. Some people say that they are accurate in their guns, others won't touch em if they were free. Buy a box and try them out.

Best bet is to try them out. I bought 2 boxes of the 25 06, and they shoot great in my #1. Can't touch my handloads though.

I have chronyd the 165 grain Hornady interbond rounds in a 22" barrel length savage. I averaged just over 2950 Fps. I also chronyd 150 grain Remington Core Lockt rounds at 2875 and 150 grain Wincheter silver tips at 2884 on the same day. One of my hunting buddies also chronyd the 165 Light mags on the same day and registered 2947 FPS average. Both guns shot 1.5" inch groups.

Considering the Light Mags were 15 grains heavier and still approx 70 FPS faster than standard ammo fired from the same barrel I am a believer.

During my last elk hunt our group took 3 elk with the 165 light mags. Five hits on three elkresulted in3 pass thrus and the two recovered bullets were 137.5 Grains and 156 grains. The recovered bullets broke both front shoulders and the past thru rounds leftgood sizedexit wounds.

PS: The Federal 180 grain High Energy Nosler Partition rounds are also a round I have chronyd at 2870 from a 22" barrel just 10 FPS off the claimed 24" velocity. 2" groups in my gun.

I would recommend that you Goggle light mag, chronograph, velocity or a similar combination. You should find several rifle reviews that are intended to demostrate gun accuacysimilar the one that I have cut and pasted below:

ACCURACY RESULTS
Steyr SBS ProHunter .30-'06

Ammunition Velocity Accuracy[*]
Federal 168 gr. Gold Medal Match 2,697 fps 0.78"
Federal 150 gr. BTSP 2,901 fps 1.11"
Hornady 150 gr. SST Light Magnum 3,093 fps 0.82"
Hornady 165 gr. BTSP Light Magnum 3,009 fps 0.98"
Hornady 168 gr. BTHP Match 2,792 fps 1.08"
Winchester 168 gr. Ballistic Silvertip 2,780 fps 1.26"

(*.)Accuracy measurements are the result of five five-shot 100 yard bench
rest groups using the Oehler P35 Chronograph

The resultsabove weredocumented by Gary Paul Johnson of Guns Magazine. The intention was to evaluate the Steyer ProHunter rifle'saccuracy not the various ammo. It is in my opinion a non biased review unlike some others. It demonstrates from the same barrell that loads meets or exceeds the manufacturers claims.

No ammunition company reveals what specific powders they use in any caliber cartridge or load. This is because they buy large lots of powder in given burning rate ranges that they consider appropriate to a given cartridge's requirements, and, using their pressure and velocity measuring instruments, load to a specified pressure & velocity level. The powders they use for this process may or may not equal any type of powder you can buy in a can at the reloading supply shop.

I read an article a few years ago about the .30-06. The guy in the article was keeping track of how many animals he got that year.

Anyways the part that I found interesting is he pulled the bullets on the federal hi-energy rounds and seated the bullet of his choice in the same weight.

thats just irresponsible Every reloader on this page knows you should never just use any bullet in place of another with the same load without working it up.
