6.5-06 or 264-win mag?

RE: 6.5-06 or 264-win mag?
What they aren't telling you about the 264mag is that to get this extra bit of velocity you are going to use a LOT more powder per shot AND you need to go with 26" bbl. The .264 pretty much died out because people discovered it was something of a fraud and never lived up to the advertising hype.
On the other hand, a 6.5/06 is far more efficient cartridge and WILL DO just about anything the 264 ever claimed. It's a very simple rifle for any competent gunsmith to make and will work on scads of actions. Cases are cheap and easy to come by as well. Very good honest rifle.

Just a few questions about the 264-win mag?
What is the parent case of the 264-win mag?
What advantage/edge does the 264 have over the 6.5-06?
Who chambers the 264-win mag?
Does it look like anyone will chamber the 6.5-06?

DON'T hold your breathe until some outfit commercializes the 6.5/'06. Ain't gonna happen...oops, well, it almost happened. The 6.5/284 is essentially the same thing capacity-wise, but better because the case is better. The 6.5/'06 is at least 200 FPS slower than the .264 Win. Mag. with the same bullets. If you want a 6.5 on an '06 case that will come close to the .264 Win., get a 6.5 Gibbs. I had one of these. With bullets up to 140 grains it would almost (BUT NEVER QUITE!!) equal the .264....

I really like the 264 caliber however in the real hunting world , its on par with the 270, 280 7 Mag and even the 30-06. It's a very good long range shooter and pretty awful hard on barrels.

6.5mm WSM might be a wildcat that will be adopted in the future.....maybe you should consider building one in that round.
or the 6.5-284 also one that may become adopted.
Those are the 2 6.5mm I'd probably consider.....

Who says the .264 is hard on barrels? That's like claiming the earth is flat? Early steels used when it was introduced[light bulletsloaded to MAX]and rapid continual fire caused throat errosion. Not nowadays.7mm STW's still shooting MOA after 5000 rounds. Not a praire dog round. One barrel will last you a lifetime of hunting......................Harold

In case you're interested, I have a Lee Loader in .264 mag that I could sell cheap. If you live in SoCal and can pick it up, I also havea few boxes of factory ammo.
PM me if you're inclined.
