Good powder and bullet combinations for 7mm mag

Hello
Thanks in advance for any help.

As I set up to start reloading, my oldest son would like to get involved reloading for this Browning 7mm Mag.
What would be a good Powder to look at starting with? How about the bullet?

Thanks again
Dan

Any good 160 grain spitzer ( NP is great) and H4831...

I have yet to see a 7MM Rem that doesn't give good hunting accuracy with that combo...

I use H4831 with all 140-grain bullets, RL22 with 150-160 grain bullets, and IMR 7828 with the 175-grainers. These three, and any powder with comparable burning rates, will be OK with any of the bullets from 140 up to 175-grains. You could get by with just buying one of these three powders.

The 140-grain Nosler Partition bullet has and will still kill any and all North American big game if driven at between 3300-3400 FPS from the 7mm Rem. Mag., and this velocity is achievable. But it is a very ruinous load for game you want to eat! I have therefore switched to the 175-grain Nosler Partition in my 7mm Rem. Mag. for any use, as it damages less meat. My load is 70 grains of IMR 7828 with this bullet in my Ruger No. 1B with 26" barrel, MV is 3070 FPS.

Caution! This 175-grain load is a heavy load that I developed by working up slowly, one-half grain at a time, starting at 62 grains. I DO NOT KNOW whether you can use it in your rifle or not!! It shoots 1", 3-shotgroups at 200 yards in my No. 1. I have also used 175-grain Sierra and Remington PSPCL bullets with this same powder charge with similar results. But I prefer the Nosler Partition for hunting, as it works regardless of what the quarry may be, from coyotes to grizzly bears.

My favorite load for the 7mmremmag is the 140gr tsx ahead of a charge of r-22.

*140 TSX over RL22
*150 NBT/NP & 154IB over RL22
160 AB over IMR 7828 or RL22

* notes what i use in my rem mag currently (TSXfor elk and moose.150 NBT deer sized)* Both of which are extremely accurate in my rifle.

Use IMR 4350 with a 150 gr. bullet. Use both Sierra 150 gr. Game King BT or Noslar Partition. With 60 gr. of 4350 you will make 3000 ft/sec. I've tried using a 140 gr. bullet but I've found that my gun likes the loads with the 150 gr. better. Each gun is different so enjoy your experimenting. With 4350 you can use 63 gr. which will give youjust over 3100 ft/sec but after much experimenting my gun performed best at 60 gr. As stated each gun performs different. I've also worked some loads with H4831 and H1000 but I have had better accuracy with the 4350.

140 gr Nosler Accubond. 67.5 gr RL-22 with Winchester brass and Winch Primers - WLRM. Cases trimmed to 2.490. OAL (to lands) of 3.352" and bullets seated to ~3.338" +/- 0.002 gave5 shot groups of 0.581" at 3080 fps in my A-Bolt Eclipse with the BOSS set at 2.4.

I also worked up to 70 grains without pressure issues and found that 68.5 grains of RL-22 at the same specs as above gave 5 shot groups of 0.281" - same BOSS settings - at 3175fps. The cases actually shrank to ~2.482 with this load!? No stickiness with the bolt or other pressure signs, but it left me scratching my head.

I found the load and sweet spot for this A-bolt!

Have fun!

RE-22, IMR4350 and H4831sc are what I would use.

Another vote for Alliant R-22. For bullets I would give a 140 Ballistic Tip a try for deer size game and 160 gr AccuBond for the bigger stuff. Only your rifle is going to dictate on what it likes. Good luck............

Lately I've been messin with H1000 and 140's. I was trying to get away from the temp instability of R22 and R19. I would give it a try if I was you. I've seen consistant velocities and sub-moa accuracy with Accubonds and TTSX's at 3285fps.

Unless your rifle is extemely perverse either IMR 4831 or H-4831SC with all bullet weights..........................Harold
