Just the sizer die has the carbide ring in it to prevent case sticking when sizing. Not sure about which crimp for your 44 but my 45 acp takes taper crimp only.

I agree with that with one small aside. Avoid the LEE safety scale. Once you figure it out, it's accurate, but one bump with your elbow and some of the plasticparts can crack.
I know this from experience. I went with a Lyman after that. I do have a digital, but it's just to keep my homecast bullets honest.;)

Get a Lyman manual , all of data is pressure tested and or lab proven , they list many powders and bullet manufactures bullets and lots of cast loads .

A taper crimp is generaly used with the auto cartriges as many of the haed space on the case mouth rather than a rim . This crimp holds the bullets in place via case to bullet friction .

A roll crimp actually presses the case mouth into the bullet and holds the bullet in place with that "crimping" force and the bullet to case friction. Cal. cartrige specific bullets have a groove in them to accomadate the crimp at the correct length and many will allow for multiple cartriges and lengths .

IMO, the differene is that a taper crimp is used on auto pistol rounds that headspace on the case mouth. If you roll-crimped this kind of ammo, you would mess up the headspacing arrangement.

Roll crimping is for heavy recoilling revolver rounds in which you ABSOLUTELY MUST prevent bullets from creeping forward out of the cases under recoil... bullets that crep forward could end up sticking out of the front face of the cylinder, preventing the cylinder from rotating AND preventing you from oppening it to remove the bad rounds........
