.243 Long Range Bullet
 

I have read that the 85gr. Sierra HPBT is a good round for small to medium size deer. What would you suggest for a deer over 200 lbs., at say 250 to 300 yards?
I am leaning towards the Hornady 95gr. SST or the Combined Technology 95gr. Ballistic Silvertip. Would one of these be a good choice?

If the 105 Berger is one of their VLD bullets, it probably won't stabilize out of most commercial .243 Winchester sporting rifles- although it would most likely fly just fine from a faster 6mm like the .240 Weatherby.

Some other candidates would include the 85 grain Hornady Interbondwith a ballistic coefficient of .395, the 90 grain Swift Sciroccowith a b.c. of .419,and the regular unbonded 85 grain boat-tail spitzer from Speer that's got a b.c. of .404. Speer and Sierra also have 100 grainboat-tails with b.c.'s of .430 or better.

Velocity over the entire flight of the bullet determines wind drift and drop. The lighter 85 and 90 grain bullets should start out a little faster, but the heavier bullets with higher b.c.'s should maintain their speed a little better. Which is better depends on how far you really plan to shoot, and at exactly what range the heavier bullets catch up to the lighter ones.


And yeah, the 95 grain Ballistic Tips and SST's should work just fine as long as you're up to making a good shot. Theirb.c.'s are around .380, which is more than adequate for adecent trajectory to 300yards.

85gr TSX, 85gr Sierra HPBT, 95gr SST, all great bullets. Just see what your gun likes best. ;)

this past season i used the 95 grain sst and had wonderful results. my long shot for the year was right around 300 and i dropped a big doe where she stood. i tipped a big buck over at right around 225 and like the doe, he never twitched. the most impotrant thing is shot placement. if your barrel has a pitch of 8 or faster the 105 berger should be a good choice. but i still recomend the sst.

I like the85 grain Cor-bon DPX hollow point for my .243. Has some great velocity in this make.
Shot (2) 220 lb bucks here in Ontario at around 200-275 yards a few years ago. Not so great up close.A 100 grain bullet works better for the 100 yard shots.
This past early winter 2007, I got a small 2 and a half year old bull moose at 175 yards with 85 Cor-bon bullet. One shot, dropped on the spot at full trot. Not my sellection for moose but I was hunting this enormus racked buck for several days and came upon the moose.
Never got the buck.

I would choose the 95 or 100-grain Nosler Partition. These bullets have soft front ends intended to expand well at low velocities at long range, yet the rear portion will stay intact even if velocities are high enough to cause the front portion to explode.... I use the 95-grainer in my 6mm/284 with a MV of 3440 FPS.......

I would second the partition. They are very hard to beat. I use my .243 primarily for coyotes, and use the 95gr BT. Leaves a big off side hole. I don't use the rifle (M70 Win) much for deer, I prefer larger calibers. But my son in law used it a couple years ago for a decent buck in Texas, and the partition did what all well placed partitions do, it killed the deer with out issue, just over 200yd

I would use the 95gr. Ballistic Silvertip high velocity and nock down.

I have taken many large Mule deer with this round out to 300 yards...
