RE: 45-70 Suggestions
Thanks for responding BC. Any idea how many loadings I can expect to get out of a 45-70 brass on average?
Thanks Tom |
RE: 45-70 Suggestions
I have some Win. cases here that have probably been
loaded at least 15 times if not more..I have found that the biggest issue with cases is if you put too tight of a crimp on them. This will cause the mouths to often split..I use just enough crimp to keep the bullets from pulling out..Some I can even spin the bullet with my fingers..But in your rifle you want to make sure you do crimp them,to keep the recoil from driving the bullet back into the case...Good luck:eek: |
RE: 45-70 Suggestions
I'm attempting to order from Midway but some of the items I need are on back order. So if I were to order I could incur multiple shipping and handling charges.
Anyone know of a place that is more likely to have it all? I need the Lyman Die, Lee Shell Holder, Reloading Tray, Winchester Brass. Thanks Tom |
RE: 45-70 Suggestions
My suggestion is to buy good brass. It will last you a long time. I can get over 10 loads from starline or more. I can't with some hornady brass or remington. I start getting cracked necks.

RE: 45-70 Suggestions
Well this pretty much sucks. I can't find a place that has everything I need. I'm either going to have to piece meal this thing and pay a lot of shipping costs or wait.

RE: 45-70 Suggestions
I ended up ordering from Buffalo Arms. I made a compromise and purchased the wooden reloading tray. I would preferred a plastic one. I picked up 50 pieces of winchester brass, the lyman reloading dies and the shell holder.
I've been trying to contact the guy at leadhead and have been unable to get through. I'd like to see if he can put a variety pack together before I purchase so that when I do order 250 bullets at least I know they will work well. Thanks for the help so far guys. Tom |
RE: 45-70 Suggestions
Stat, I haven't ordered from Leadhead in couple of years. Are his phone lines busy or is there another problem? I am assuming he's still in business. Certainly his website is still active. Everyone who calls wants to BS with him, including me, so this may be your problem.

RE: 45-70 Suggestions
Just got off the phone withTommy fromLeadheads. I agree he was very nice guy to talk to. Exactly what I would expect from a leadhead not to be confused with Ledhead. LOL.
He gave me a bit of mix of the bullets. I got only gas checked in 300gr and 425gr. 125 of each. So I should be set for a while unless shooting the 45-70 becomes addictive. I'm really looking forward to putting some bullets together. I will likely have lots of questions once I get all my stuff. I haven't put a bullet together in over a year so I'm going to move real slow at first. Thanks to all for taking the time to show me the way. Tom |
