Think I found the sweet spot 30-378

I think I found the sweet spot with this gun. Weatherby 30-378 pushing a 180 accubond chronographed at 3350 fps with 108.5 grains of Retumbo. I turned the necks on all my brass, weighed the brass, bullets, and measured the runout. All were .003 or better. The group size is about .5" at 300 yards. I have 300-400 rounds through this factory barrel and it looks like accuracy is improving. I only had one 3 shot sequence with this load. I am heading to the range in Feb to hopefully duplicate it.

Thats pretty awsome;). Good Shootin! Have you bore scoped it to check the barrel wear? Just curious, I heard some of them get worn out pretty quick.

Dang! I thought my .338 Edge burned a lot of powder. I am running 225 NAB's at 3200 fps with 102 grains of RL-25. I haven't shot much at 300 yards, yet, but I hope I get some groups like your. Nice!

Ain't it just a kick in the pants when you get a group like that.

Hopefully you can duplicate it and save your barrel for the real item. Tom.

haugenna:

Try a 200 gr. for a devistating elk load. Good luck.

I have a real nice recipe for 200 grain TSX giving me I think it was .96" at 300 yds right at 3200 fps.

Jeepkid,
I will keep the borescope out of it until I have cause or concern to take a look in there. I heard the same thing on these rifles but it doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon after 300+ rounds I am not too worried.

Dan,
I used to use RL 25 but the pressure was high and the sensitivity to temperature was great. 101.2 grains with a 200 grain TSX is what i was using. I shot my deer this year in the early high hunt and it was pretty sticky unloading the case.

I sure hope it duplicates or gets close to it in Feb.

300-400 rounds through a 30-378? That's a lot of powder and bullets. Do you shoot a lot of cheapo bullets, too, or just the premium stuff.

I shoot a 300 Wby with Barnes TSX and 88.5gr of RL22. I see dollar signs every time I squeaze the trigger :D.

Nice group, by the way.

RE: Think I found the sweet spot

Barnes,
When I bought it, the owner claimed to have 60 rounds of factory ammo through it. I noticed some of the brass he gave me had silver primers. Which told me he had some reloaded ammo in it as well. So who knows how many he shot through it. I bought four boxes of factory ammo and shot them all up three years ago. I average about 15 to 20 rounds of ammo to the range each time if not a little more. During load development the first year we tried all sorts of powder and bullet combinations; 50BMG, 5010, 7828, 7828SC, RL22 and RL25. Also tried sierra, barnes, nosler partitions, and found a good match with 200 grain TSX and RL 25.I average 8 or 9 trips to the range a year for two years, 120+120+60+80=380. Not to mention the animal shots and a few sight ins after a plane ride puts me in at about 400. I shoot the premium cuz thats what I hunt with, but Iswitched to Accubonds and buy the seconds right fromNosler in Bend. I reworked my loads this year to try and do some paper punching at 800+. Just want to see what this gun is capable of. Plus its fun and that's what matters.

I guess I'd shoot a lot more if I could. I have a couple little kids and the range is at the hunting camp (2.5 hours away).I used to shoot a lot more. I also had less expenses, too :D.

I've been shooting the Barnes X bullets exclusively since 1997 as they've given me the best on-game performance. Accuracy is about an inch at 100 yards with most guns. I could probably do better but that's where I stop and say "good enough" :D. We load the 308 with IMR4895, the 30-06 with IMR4350 and the 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag and 300 Wby Mag all eat RL22.

I have seen that cal. used at the 1000 yard range in Bodine Pennsylvania...The gut
did pretty well with it as I recall...I had a 30-338 that I used..Best I could do with
it was a 10 inch group..Good luck with yours....It is one awsome rifle...
