30-06 bullet recommendation
I just finished with working on some loads. looked in my bullet box. I am running low on hornady .30 cal 150gr interlock. I am wanting to try other brands. I am a low volume handloader maybe at most 50 rounds every few months, so cost is a factor.
any ideas? |
RE: 30-06 bullet recommendation
I have been using 165gr gamekings for years. No complaints. Also 165gr ballistic tips are a good choice. And both are fairly cheap.

?? My bullet of choice in my 30/06 is the interlock in 180 grain. It's accurate & deadly on everything---elk, deer, black bear & this yeara nice WY moose. Hornadys are priced right. Why change something that's not broke.
But if you want to change---I think that Speer, Sierra & Hornday are all about the same cost. That leaves Core-lokt & Power Points-----You can get them in bulk form Cabela's. I'm thinking you are only saving a couple of bucks |
RE: 30-06 bullet recommendation
My favorite bullets for deer are the 150 grain Sierra Gameking and the 150 grain SierraPro-Hunter.Been using those bullets for decades and have killed about 200 deer with them. Killed four deer this year witha Remington 700 in .30-06 and the Sierra 150 grain BTSP. One wa**** at a lasered 412 yards. Three deer were bang flops and the other went about 20 yards after being hit.

An economical bullet that I've had good luck with is the Winchester 150 grain powerpoint...
I load them for a friend's '06 and he has taken whitetails, caribou, black bear and pronghorns with them with excellent success.. They are very accurate in his rifle, perform well on deer sized game and won't break the bank... |

The 165 gr. Hornady Interbond has been very accurate and quite lethal on deer in my .30-06.

RE: 30-06 bullet recommendation
For me it depends on how you hunt. I use different bullet's for different scenarios.
In my Remington pump carbine, I shoot the 200 grain Sierra Game King for reliable and accurate shooting out to 250 yards. The bullet is devastating on anything I have shot with it. Up to elk. Im my TC Encore I shoot the Nosler 165 grain BT. They outshoot the 165 grain Sierra, so the Nosler is my choice. However I do not think the BT will outperform the Sierra, it just shoots better in my Encore. Rifle is accurate to 400 yards with no problem. In my 700 Remington I shoot the 180 grain Sierra Game King(could be the Pro Hunter-I need to check my shelf). I have not used this rifle for a long time. The 180 was a very effective bullet. 400 yard shots were no problem with this rig also. I like the 165-200 grain weight's for the 30 caliber. These weight bullet's have always shot better in my 30 caliber's. I found anything under the 165's just did not shoot as accurately, and also IMO was not as effective on game. Tom. |

Very economically priced and they work very well are 180 gr. core lokt's. Midway usually has them on sale.

RE: 30-06 bullet recommendation
For whitetail handloads in the '06 I really like a 165 Nosler Ballistic Tip tuned to about 2650 fps...

RE: 30-06 bullet recommendation
I got my midway flier a couple days ago, priced everything but high ends.
$18.79 to 24.99 before shipping, omg I payed $18 year ago for the hornadys. and they are now $21 and going up after the first of the year. Still cheaper then factory loads. [&:] |
