150-grain, .270 loads
Taking my three kids to Africa this summer for a plains game hunt. They shoot .270s, but all my loads for their guns are with 130-rain bullets.
Need some suggested loads utilizing 150-grain bullets, (Swift A-frames). I like H-4831 in the .270, but don't know if that's the optimum powder for that size bullet. I'd love to find a load that would push 150-gainer over 2900 fps. Thanks GAH |
RE: 150-grain, .270 loads
I load 56grains of RL-22 and a 150 gr XFB Barnes bullet for my brother and he is 2950+ with a 24" barrel . Accuracy is great and good penetration with the Barnes bullets .

RE: 150-grain, .270 loads
My most accurate 150-grain load has been with the Nosler Partition bullets and 53.5 grains of IMR 4350. This breaks 2800 FPS from my 20" barreled Mannlicher-Schoenauers (1/9" twist), so should break 2900 in a 24". Have not tried RE22, but did not get good accuracy from Jack O'Connor's H4831 loads!
Keep yore powder dry!! |
RE: 150-grain, .270 loads
I'd be working with H-4831 and looking to spit the 150 grainers at about 3,000'/sec.
Most shots in Africa are under 60 yards.....accuracy might be totally acceptable with 2" groups! |
RE: 150-grain, .270 loads
I used 58.5 grains of H4831, CCI 250 primer and either the 150 grain Speer hot-cor or the Nosler partition. My 20 inch barreled rifle gave 2850 fps and very good accuracy. I'd work up from 56 grains though as my rifle has a long throat. This rifle took several elk and loads of Mule deer. I never could tell which bullet was better so used the Speer bullet mostly.

RE: 150-grain, .270 loads
GA, so your still going to Africa? Thats cool. Hey, I have tried to break 2900 myself with no luck. Best I got was 2850fps with 59gr of H1000 and that was max I would go. Probably go another grain but decided to stick with the manual. But it was with 150 Sierra Gameking. Didn' t try any other bullet.
Also, accuracy sucks with that load for me. The best with my 270 is 130gr Sierra and 47gr of IMR4064. Hey, I went that Harrisburg hunting show in PA. I saw a few outfitters I reconized. They said that my outfitter went out of business but Lenoard Payne took it over. Is that George' s brother or something? I am talking about George Payne from Ironbound. |
