RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Guess you told me--Ok,so what if I had told you that I am shooting 1500
yards with my 45-70 sharps, with black powder and a 537 grain cast bullet..And using a vineer rear sight with an adjustable eye cap..And a front appeture with a .100 hole in it,using a spirit level attached to the barrel.. And hitting the target.. |

And hitting the target.. I'd call you Quigley, because that only happens in the movies. ;) You didn't answer any of the long range questions either... |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Well if you would take to time and effort to learn instead of shooting
your mouth off,you would know the answers already..And the .110 shim under the rear base will give you plenty of elevation..And I never said that I was using the v max bullets at that range..And if you don't think the black powder will reach out there either, read some of Paul Matthews books or Talk to the guys at Buffalo Arms-Wayne Venturrino-Fred Cornel-I could name several that are capable of doing some amazing things with a rifle.. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
I want to thank you all for you well written words
of knowledge..If I had half of what you do I could write pages and pages full and make a few bucks.. But it would all be worthless as others like you will come along..Some people want to learn from others, but you are afraid to let them so you spen all your time putting people down..Are you afraid to learn or just to lazy..Take the energy you use to run you lips and put it behind a rifle butt.. And the BSA SCOPES are a damn good scope..I see lots of them on rifles at Bodine.. And another thing,if you have too much power and the sun is shining, you will have to learn how to read the mirage in order to hit the target every time..Even with open sights you have to watch the wind as well as mirage...You will notice the target is doing some wierd things out there.. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Johnny2......I once talked to a guy in a gun store who shot an elk at 700 yds. with a 50 mph. crosswind. And that wasn't the first time, either. Could you be his son??

[blockquote]Never said what rifle I was using..If you look back it might say something about
being a different rifle...And as far as the stents go,that has nothing to do with shooting..Damn you ARE dumb:D Now maybe with a pace maker you would be right..You can get a detatched retina with the high power.. And if you knew has much as you talk that black powder cartridge rifle have a less recoil in a 45-70..Now if you said a 45-120 or something in that order you might be right again..But you are so stuipd, you can never learn.. And you can shim a scope..Have you ever heard of lapping the scope rings? Probably not..You are like alot of other guys I know,,They read alot and talk alot, but never do much shooting..Hell,I shot 31 lbs of Goex 2F last year...And I don't care if you believe it or not..You are just trying to impress other huys on here,by calling someone else a liar or a dummy..I wish you lived around here,I would like to see just HOW much you really know..I will pray for you tonight....If there is any hope for a dumb ass such as yourself...Steve Garbe can tell you all about it...And I have shot right along side of Paul Matthews,Jerry Matalavage-Marvin mussleman...I aint afraid to play with the big boys and thier toys.. In the last three pages the standing are something like
Pro-johnny =1 (himself) Anti-johnny=5 with two being neutral and saying that its good for CLOSE RANGE...so they're still not agreeing with you. Who's "trying to impress" who? WHAT THE HECK does a pacemaker and your retina have to with each other? This thread has become amusement to all of us who want to see just how much "blap" you can spout off. You're not old enough to have a pacemaker anyway. Men of that generation use complete sentences and an entirely different voice/vocabulary. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Well, Johnny2, if you think you're gonna come on here and try to BS us with your drivel, you best find another place to land. You argue with RR and the rest of us over the most basic language of shooting. You have little or no serious knowledge of loading and ballistics.
I personally feel you are a detriment to our sport and will ignore your posts in the future. You are someone to be ignored. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
As has been mentioned, perhaps you should go to a forum where the people actually know more than you do if you are going to ask questions.
So you shot 31 lbs of black powder last year. I'm a little confused. Are you trying to impress people with your expertise or ask stupid questions? I find it curious that such an expert as yourself would even ask such a stupid question as what bullet to use in a .22-250 for deer. Everyone knows that the new Varmint Grenade is where it is at, at least for this side of 1000 yds.;) |

Johnny...while I'm confident you're not COMPLETELY full of s**t, I think you're in over your head when discussing LR shooting with Ridge Runner. He knows his stuff and it's applied knowledge, and I'd believe him long before I'd believe you. He's already pulled your punk card on the 22-250 at 1750 yards. As far as your BP 45-70 claims...I'd like to know how big the target you're shooting at is... Mike |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
RR--wHAT CAL DID YOU SHOOT THAT GROUP WITH? Impressive I must say.....
The size of the targets for 1000 yard black powder cartridge rifles is I think 5 foot by 8 foot..And I believe the center is a 13 inch bull....Something like an old military 5V target.. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Well,no matter what you all say,I have kilt 2 deer this year with the 22-250 all were dead with in a minute or two...One was shot at 450 yards in the neck. She went down like a ton of bricks. The other 2 bucks were any where from 170 to 325 yards..Same thing..So I guess I answered my own question.. The 22-250 WILL do the job and do it well...My bullet was the 55 grain Hornady V-MAX.......No meat wasted either... A neck shot calls for for a very small margin of error. You must hit the spine, which isn't really that difficult at relatively close range on a standing deer (provided you also know exactly where the spine is). Or, you must be lucky enough to sever the carotid artery or jugular vein. I'm not saying that this feat is not possible at 450 yards, but I am curious exactly where you were aiming when you pulled off this feat. I've run the numbers on three different ballistic calculators which claim that a 55gr V-Max, with a .255 ballistic coefficient, leaving the muzzle at 3800fps and zeroed at 250 yards, drops over 18" below the line of sight, and will be shoved over 20" laterally in a 10mph wind at 450 yards. I'm a pretty good shot and can dope wind fairly well, but that would be a very tough shot for me. Please tell me how you did it. I might try it on a paper target, but not on a live deer. RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
What da heck!?!?!??!?!?? Do you hunt with the 7mm Allen mag? What's the heaviest 7mm bullets you've found?
|
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
RR---Very impressive...I had a 30-338 years back that was also a good shooter..But the barrel (HART) would heat up pretty fast on it..That was the biggest problem as far as competeing with it..We were allowed 6 minutes for unlimited sighter rounds and then 10 minutes for score..If I shot more than 3 rounds for sighters I might as well quit..I used the 190 grain Sierra match bullets At around 2900 fps..It had a KDF break, which was not allowed when competeing..

RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Merry Christmas....good grief, I can't imagine putting 110gr of powder behind a bullet. I know different powders have radically different behaviors but there's something psychologically unsettling about it when I've seen what a "measly" 20gr can do in my 44 and what 35gr can do in my 22-250!!!!
Learned the accuracy/performance VS weight dilemma long ago...sucks that we can't have our cake and eat it too! lol |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Oh yeah--I used to shoot at Bodine,PA...down below trout run..I think the record there now is with the
6.5x284 or something like that..The smallest I ever managed with the 30-338 was 10 inches..No matter what I could not get it any smaller..Maybe with a heavyer barrel it would have done better..I forgot to tell you that I used IMR 7828 in that rifle...A friend of mine has a 22 Clark Which will do fairly well on a nice calm day..You will have to come over some time and try it with your Allen.. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
And i'm sorry if you misunderstood..I never said I shot the 22-250 at that range..I said the scope wouold range out that far..**** a 22 would never do that..Even the 50 BMG has trouble unless the conditions are super..And your right the BSA isn't a good choice, but it does work...For a 1K shoot a 10 or12 is all you need to keep the heat waves from distorting the target..I have even but a piece of venetion blind on the barrel to help dispurse the heat waves...Time is the main thing when shooting the 1K so you try to get all shots off in the same conditions if possible. That is why a heavy barrel is so critical...And if you don;t believe it possible to get a deer at the distance mentioned then,so be it..I have shot woodchucks out to 825 with the 22-250 when conditions are right..And yes some of them were damn lucky shots..That is why it is sometimes better to have a spotter with you to see the bullet hits..With a spotting scope of course..

RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
i've had real good luck with the barnes 53gr xlc with lung shots. they don't go more than 25 or 30 yards and then give up. there are other deer bullets out there for the 224 cal but this is the only one that i would use in a 1-14 twist. with regards to accuracy of barnes bullets the like to be loaded off the lands around .050". untill i found out about this i had dismal groups loading them close to the rifling e.g. 3-5" at 100 yrds. loading them off the lands .050 really tightens up the groups around an inch or less @100. unless your hunting really large boddied deer the 53/barnes will do the job. good hunting, treeman59

RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Thats one of the bullets I tried...and I got super excited about it because it was the only handload I could get to shoot accurately with a non-varmint bullet. I lost the one deer I shot...and it was well within 100 yards off a bipod...even if I completely pulled it (which I didn't) I wouldn't have been off by more than 3". Never found a drop...made me absolutely sick. I could hear it going through the leaves as I "waited" and know I hit. (This was lung shot like yours.) I may work up the courage to try one more time...but it will be awhile, and by then I'll likely have a caliber much better suited for the job.
|
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Soilarch, I would question that your deer was lung shot, I don't claim to be an authority but have shot more deer than the average Joe in my 56 years of hunting and I have yet to see a lung shot deer go 50 yards, most of the time a lung shot deer is lucky to make it 50 feet. Also lung shot deer spray blood usually in both direction (note I said usuallly). I hate to say it but I think you missed, that's not meant as an insult but sometimes it happens, no matter who we are. I agree the 53gr. TripleShock is a bullet to get excited about (take a look in the hog & exotics thread - "If you were setting up a ...... etc." and you'll see the results of the 53 gr Barnes bullet on four Texas hogs).

RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
I'll grant that it does seem the most likely thing. I'm no expert either but it's hard to see me being "off" much at all sitting cross-legged and having a bipod. It was a doe as well...and I was about as relaxed as could be. I'm not a sniper or 1k shooter but at 100 yards I could likely take 50 pennies and 60 shells and run out of both at the same time. (This is would be in the cross-legged bipod setup I was in when hunting)
The big catch is that I found ZERO blood. I'm not the world best tracker but we often get a group of guy together if they're not a "red carpet" to the animal. I can hold my own. I nailed two this year in my homestate with a 44 revolver and redot. Both were about one inch higher than I would've liked One was shot completely freehand at about 30 yards the other I rested the frame on an old burn-barrel and was likely a 60 yard shot as well. I actually hope I do did miss, but likelihood of me completely missing is hard to swallow...and I would think that even a non-lethal hit at those velocities (22-250 within 100 yards) would create some sort of splash...or SOMETHING!!!! Oh well, it'll be a lot of shooting and thinking before I'm comfortable with trying it again. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
I shot a deer this year that left NO blood, and then a few days later I found it dead and eaten by a bear.[:@] A buddy of mine shot another that left a lot of blood, and after tracking it for about a mile, there was no more blood trail. I was using a 7mm Rem Mag, he was using a .308 Win.

RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Soilarch,
My suggestion of a miss is primary prompted by experience. Experience with the 22-250, experience with the 53 gr Barnes TripleShock, experience with taking many deer, and experience with missing a few. I can almost guarantee that if you got a hit with your 22-250 that you would have found blood, even a deer with a non-lethal flesh wound will leave drops of blood close to the hit area (I would believe that most experienced hunter would agree). Even with the Hogs that I took with the 22-250 there was always blood and hogs will close off a wound faster than any animal that I know! The 53gr Barnes that was used to shot the four hogs turned their insides to mush and not one went more than 20 feet. There is a possibility that you bullet hit a small twig on it way to the target and at the speed your pushing the 53gr Barnes, it doesn't take much to change it's flight path. A miss may have had nothing to do with you aim!!!! |

A miss may have had nothing to do with you aim!!!! Like I said waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back at the start of the thread, I've read a lot of the pro-.22 stuff on the web. For some guys it plain works, and they love it. Other's (mostly those who refuse to try it) swear it's no good. We all know that confidence and trust in our equipment is nearly as important as how it actually performs...It'll take some time, and a ton of shooting/testing before I get the nerve up to us my 22-250 again. Thanks bluegunner. |
RE: Deer with my 22-250 ??????????
Soilarch,
Have faith in your 22-250, it's a great gun using the right bullet. For deer and hog, I use Barnes 53gr TripleShock pushed along by 35gr of Hodgens Varget (one great load). Just a quick story for you! Three springs ago, I was hunting Turkeys in Northern Nebraska. It was a windy day and I was walking along a river bottom out of the wind. I would walk a hundred yards, call, listen and walk some more. I had moved about half a mile using this routine when both a hen and Tom answered my call. I immediately got seated in a patch of small trees, trusting in my camo to due the rest. It wasn't a full minute and the hen walked by me looking to kick some butt and the Tom wasn't far behind. He was huge (biggest Merriam I've ever seen) and would be walking about 12 feet in front of me. I was ready and concentrating and as he passed in front I dropped the hammer. The gun fired and he was still standing there, I was so shocked that I didn't think to pump in a second round and try again. Of course, before I got my mind functioning again he ran away. I couldn't believe it, how could I have missed? After calming down, I discovered that as I moved my gun right to left following the bird, a small tree moved itself about an inch in front of my barrel and took the full load of bb's from my gun. Not one bb got past the tree! I was concentrating so hard on the bird that I didn't register the tree. Didn't feel to smart that day!!!! |
