30-06 load

My dad and I are reloading shells for my 30-06..we talked to my cousin about the best load and he did some looking around and we came up with a 168 grain sierra bullet, 4350 hogden powder and cci primers..anybody ever use something like this or what do you guysl load in your 30-06..the 168 seem to fly nearly as fast as a 130 grain and this will have more energy..just wondering what you all think

RE: 30-06 load

The 168 grain Match King bullet is not designed for hunting. It is a Match bullet. It will probably not expand correctly when used on deer. The hollow point is for ease of manufacture. For severaldecades i have used the 150 grain Game Kingand Pro Hunter bullets to good effect on hogs and deer. There is a 165 grain hollowpoint Game King bullet but i have no experience with it.

Falcon is correct, the 168 Sierra is a "Match" bullet and should not be used for Big Game. Plenty of great hunting bullets available without using target bullets.
H 4350 and IMR 4350 are both very popular powders for the 06, but only "Your" rifle can tell you if it is the best choice . Every rifle is different and what works in my rifle may or may not work in yours. Load development and testing is the only way to find what your rifle likes and dislikes. The 4350's is a good place to start, but you may have to move on and try another powder or two to get the accuracy you are looking for. Same goes for bullets. Your rifle may like the 165's or it may prefer a 180 or a150.

The '06 load that works well for both my friend and I in 4 different '06s is 49 gr of IMR4064 behind a 180 gr Sierra Game King or Hornady 180 SP Interlock using CCI LR primers.

I've gotten great accuracy with 47.9 gr of I4064 and Hornady 165 gr sst's, ww case and wlr primers.

I too am a fan of the Hornady 165 gr sst's. I just dropped a doe from 150 yards yesterday morning. When I found her (15 yards away)her lung was sticking out the other side of her chest and her heart was missing all together when I cleaned her. (I'll post pictureswhen I get them put on my computer)

H4350 is a wonderful 30/06 powder. It works well with 150, 165, and 180 grain bullets. I use H4350 as my 30/06 powder.

Having said that, one of the trully neat things about the 30/06 is it's ability to use many different powders.

RE: 30-06 load

I load quite a few 30 06 rounds( I have eight rifles so chambered) For 165gr bullets I use the hornady interlock with IMR3031, it varies per the rifle I'm using it in as to which works best. For 150 and 180gr bullets I use 60gr of RL22. I also have a custom carbine that I use for hogs, that loves 220gr bullets (RN)with H4350. Just use what ever your rifle likes best.
